Purifier +4 is an enchanted bastard sword which can only be used by non-evil aligned Paladin class warriors. This item appears in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition.
In-game description before upgrading[]
“ | This single handed weapon is infused with the very essence of virtue, and is rumored to be the sanctified blade of the famous paladin Sir Wediyer. The weapon was lost when Sir Wediyer pursued a fleeing pit fiend through a planar rift. Neither the fiend nor Sir Wediyer ever returned. | ” |
Gameplay[]
The bastard sword inflicts 2d4+4 points of Slashing damage with +4 additional points against chaotic evil aligned creatures.
The blade provides a -4 THAC0 bonus, weighs 6 pounds and it has a speed factor of 4.
Also, the weapon bestows the wielder with +20% Magic resistance while equipped.
Aquisition[]
The weapon can be found in the Watcher's Keep Teleport Maze level, within a a specific chamber.
This chamber has a great rock column in the center of the area, which can be interacted with.
The rock has the following inscription chiseled onto it face:
- "WITH MY LAST BREATH, I PLACE MY GREATEST PRIZE FOREVER BEYOND THE REACH OF THE EVIL ALL AROUND ME."
If the character is not lawful good, or of any evil alignment, then nothing happens except for a text displayed, reading:
- The rock is solid. You can do nothing to it.
If an evil aligned character interacts with it, the stone will display a text reading:
- The stone emanates a feeling of "goodness" which recoils at your touch, sending a wave of magical energy sweeping through the entire room...
At this point the room is bombarded by a Meteor Swarm spell.
If a lawful good-aligned character interacts with the rock, they trigger a different text display:
- Your hand sinks into the stone column as if it were air, the surface rippling around it. A moment later, your hand closes around a solid object and quickly pulls it out.
The character has the Purifier +4 placed in their backpack. If full, it will appear on the ground.
Upgraded Purifier[]
It can be upgraded by Cespenar, which requires the Eye of Tyr and some gold.
Purifier +5 now deals 2d4 +5 points of damage with +5 additional points of damage against chaotic evil aligned creatures, has a -5 THAC0 bonus, weighs 5 lbs and it has a speed factor of 3. Also, the weapon gives the wielder 30% magical resistance and it can be used twice per day to cast Dispel Magic and once per day to cast Mass Cure. This weapon is now a very powerful weapon, perhaps the most powerful of its type along with Foebane.
In-game description after upgrading[]
“ | With the Eye of Tyr set into its pommel, Purifier is perhaps the greatest single instrument of holy justice on the face of Faerun. | ” |
Bugs[]
As of BG2EE 2.6, Several items that cast area-of-effect spells required creature targets but should not have: Cone of Cold via the White Dragon Scale, Dispel Magic via Purifier, Prismatic Spray via the Helm of Brilliance. This is identified and corrected in The Enhanced Edition Fixpack (EEFP). Ref: (chan20.itm, comps65.itm, helm16.itm, sw1h65.itm).
Although the upgraded weapon's description claims that its Dispel Magic ability is cast at level 20, it actually scales with the character's divine caster level. On a test with a level 30 Thief (with Use Any Item) and a level 30 Paladin, the Thief was unable to dispel a level 8 Bard's Mirror Image using this weapon's Dispel Magic, whereas the Paladin was able to do it consistently. This bug does not apply to the Mass Cure ability, that one works properly (it's cast at level 20, no matter who wields the weapon).
