Gameplay[]

The wizard casts this spell and my apply it to one creature, including self - the range is only 1 foot.

The spell launches a sparkling green projectile at the targeted creature, which then affects the target with a color change - if the target is a party member, their portrait will display an icon (No. 11) labeled as "Protection From Missiles", and the combat log will display a text reading "Protected from Normal Missiles".

When the spell is first applied to a target a sound effect is audibled, and another when the spell expires.

When the spell manifests, the targeted creature is surrounded by a semitransparent, purple-colored cylinder graphic that remains over the protected creature for the spell's duration, or until the spell is removed.

This spell can be taken down by a Dispel Magic effect or a Breach.

The spell protects against certain projectiles, nine different types altogether.

If any missiles use that particular projectile, then the wizard will not be struck, and the combat screen will display a "Weapon ineffective" message.

When a weapon has both a melee and ranged mode, Protection From Normal Missiles only affects the ranged mode (because this mode uses a "projectile").

Note: Despite the generalizing description of this spell, the list of affected ammunition and throwing weapons is not at all based on their enchantment level or their being magical. Instead, the spell mechanics have hand-picked[1] projectiles it should protect against. That list differs between games and editions and is reported below.
