Protection From Evil, 10' Radius is a 4th-level priest spell only cast by cleric and paladin classes. the spell bestows the same effects as the 1st-level priest/wizard spells Protection From Evil to multiple party creatures, with a prolonged spell duration.

Some other classes may cast this spell from scrolls, see the InfoBox.

Description[]

When this spell is cast, all allied creatures within a 15-ft. radius are affected individually by Protection From Evil. It creates a magical barrier around the recipients at a distance of one foot. The barrier moves with the recipient and has two major effects: First, all attacks made by evil or evilly enchanted creatures against the protected creature receive a penalty of -2 to each attack roll. Second, summoned demons cannot target protected creatures.

Gameplay[]

The caster applies this spell to themself.

When the spell is applied, the caster and all party affiliated creatures in the 15-feet radius of the caster will show a brief 3D graphic effect and fade from color rendered on their sprite, and a then for the duration of spell the creature will be affected by a continuous color glow pulse effect - a text will display reading "Protection From Evil".

A player character with this spell active will show an icon (No. 142) titled "Protection From Evil" on their portrait.

The spell can be applied as a buff to party summoned/gated demons as well - which might be desired if the party has summoned multiple fiends (so they won't target and attack each other).

This spell applies a Protection From Evil effect to allies in a large radius around the caster - including allied gated demons, despite the fact they have red circles -, providing summoned demon-protection and Saving Throw/THAC0 bonuses/penalties as described in the linked article about said effect. Noteworthy, however, is the fact that this also gives the buffed creature bonuses to Saving Throws not mentioned in the spell description.

Bugs[]

  • In all editions, the spell name states a 10-ft. radius, as well as its descriptions from the original games do. However, all party members in a 15-ft. radius around the spell's target are affected. The Enhanced Editions at least fix the description to reflect this. A 10 feet radius is used a lot in the pen-and-paper rules – this spell's name is taken from them.

This icon indicates content from the original Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast campaign.
In the original Baldur's Gate, this spell does not check the alignment of enemy creatures, granting its effects versus any and all attacks and spells. This was fixed in Shadows of Amn and the Enhanced Editions.

This icon indicates content from the original Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast campaign.
Although a cleric can reach level 8 in Tales of the Sword Coast, the original add-on still uses a fixed duration of 7 turns – which is only correct for the maximum level reachable without the expansion.

The saving throw bonus is removed since Shadows of Amn, but here still mentioned in the description.
  • The icon for the spell scroll has the right border cut off in the original Baldur's Gate II.

Note: Except for spellbook/level specific details, the general effects as described above and the notes about gameplay apply in the same way to the following spells.

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Priest spell Protection from Evil, 10' Radius has several differences from the game's version. First, is a reversible spell and could as well be cast as Protection From Good, 10' Radius. If the anyone in the radius melee attacks across the spell barrier the protection is cancelled. Extra planar creatures cannot make bodily contact across the spell's barrier.
