Baldur's Gate Wiki

A Potion of Power temporarily boosts the imbiber's combat ability, health, and thieving skill functions.

The potion has a duration of 4 turns (40 rounds) and is usable by all classes except for the Wizard Slayer.

Description

This powerful elixir is similar to the potion of heroism in that it effectively raises the imbiber's level and can be used by all character classes. This affects Hit Points, THAC0, and thieving abilities, although it does not raise the backstab multiplier. This effect is applied to the base, before any attribute modifiers are added.

Gameplay[]

When the user quaffs this potion, a sound effect is heard in game, and another will be audible when the potion's duration expires. The user's portrait will display an icon (no. 22 "Heroism") for the duration. Certain lighting effects and a color fade briefly render over the user after drinking the potion.

The potion provides the following effects:

The potion's effects are subject to being dispelled.

This potion has no restriction placed on it to prevent "stacking" for additive skill increases with another dose of the same potion type, although that wouldn't be allowed by rule in the Advanced D&D 2E ruleset, but it is allowed in the BG video game.

  • Although the description says the Potion of Power is similar to a Potion of Heroism, the BG video game allows the two potions to "stack". However, only the HP modifications stack, and as the Potion of Power bestows a better bonus, ensure that this potion is used last for best benefit.

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset has no "Potion of Power" or equivalent listed in the Dungeons Masters Guide (DMG).

The "Potion of Power" is added in the Encyclopedia Magica, although it behaves differently than the BG video game item.

In the PnP rules, there are four different varieties of this potion, one each for warriors, wizards, priests, and rogues. Each type of potion lasts 1d4+4 turns. Characters receive no bonuses if they drink a potion meant for another class.

The BG video game version just went its own way and created a new item for all classes, while using the PnP potion name - See the External links for a description of the original potions.
