Baldur's Gate Wiki

Consuming a Potion of Master Thievery grants the imbiber the abilities of a master thief, improving pickpocketing and lockpicking skills temporarily.

The potion has a duration of 3-hours (15 turns). Stacks with Potion of Perception and itself up to the cap of 280.

Description

Potion of Master Thievery

This potion will temporarily transform the drinker into a master thief. The skills that are affected are Open Locks and Pick Pockets, which are increased significantly. The effect will last for 3 hours; however, only Thieves and Bards may use this potion.

Gameplay[]

When the user quaffs this potion, a sound effect is heard in game, and another will be audible when the potion's duration expires. The user's portrait will display an icon (no. 58 "Master Thievery") for the duration. Certain lighting effects and a color fade briefly render over the user after drinking the potion.

The potion provides the following effects:

The potion's effects are subject to being dispelled.

This potion has no restriction placed on it to prevent "stacking" for additive skill increases with another dose of the same potion type, although that wouldn't be allowed by rule in the Advanced D&D 2E ruleset, but it is allowed in the BG video game.

This potion also works in combination with one or more Potion of Perception doses.

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset has no "Potion of Master Thievery" listed in the Dungeons Masters Guide (DMG).

However, the "Potion of Magic Thievery" is added by the Encyclopedia Magica.

The PnP potion functions in a different manner and a variable duration than the BG video game version - instead of just giving a fixed bonus to two thieving skills, the PnP potion temporarily adds +20 to +8 percent skill bonuses to all thief skills based on the imbibers current experience level - and eventually the potion cannot help a rogue at all when they reach level 13 or greater.

The Rogue Rebalancing mod implements the AD&D 2E ruleset regarding this potion and faithfully recreates it to match the PnP game. This potion won't "stack" with this mod.
