Baldur's Gate Wiki

A Potion of Magic Protection bestows the imbiber with a temporary magic resistance value.

Description[]

This potion will leave the drinker with 50% resistance to all harmful magic. The effect will last for 2 hours or until dispelled.

Gameplay[]

This potion can be used by all classes, and it will last 2-hours (10 turns) or until it is dispelled. Like most potions, effects from quaffing multiple doses are additive, although magic resistance values above 100% are rarely necessary.

When imbibed the user will have icon (No. 63 "Magic Resistance") displayed on their portrait. A lighting effect plays over the user, as well as an audible sound effect. Another one plays when the potion's duration expires.

The potion's +50% magic resistance boost is not categorized as any spell school and has no secondary type, which means that, for example, a Breach or Spell Thrust won't affect it, but it can be removed by any applicable Dispel Magic effects (which are themselves not subject to magic resistance).

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset has no "Potion of Magic Protection" listed in the Dungeons Masters Guide (DMG).

The "Potion of Magic Protection" is also missing from the Encyclopedia Magica, although there are two potions titled "Potion of Magic Resistance" and "Potion of Magic Resistance II" detailed, but they actually do not confer a magic resistance rating at all, and function differently than the BG video game version, which seems to be an invention of the game developers.
