A Potion of Infravision bestows the user with infravision for a temporary period lasting 4-hours (20 turns).
Description
| “ | This potion will bestow the ability of infravision upon its user. The effect will last for 4 hours or until dispelled. | ” |
Gameplay[]
Quaffing this potion will instantly apply the Infravision status effect to the imbiber.
When imbibed a 3D graphic effect, color fade and a "gulp" text string is displayed.
The potion applies a "State: Infravision" {Effect code No. 63) to the recipient.
This state makes all visible creatures with body heat that are currently in a "shadowed" part of the area receive a "warm" (red-shifted) overlay.
Body heat is determined by a creature's animation (INI file), and the term "shadowed" is determined by each area's Light Map - some areas have a separate Light Map for "nighttime" hours.
The infravision state is basically a cosmetic effect, and doesn't provide any tangible gameplay changes, bonuses, or penalties; for instance, it doesn't affect detection ranges, visual range, stealth, Hide in Shadow, THAC0, spell casting, targeting etc.
If the player selects a party member who has this ability active, then any visible creatures in detection range will have the warm reddish overlay presented if the creatures are in a shadowed area.
Note that Elf. Half-elf, Dwarf, and Gnome player characters have this ability innately "hard coded" into their racial creature file, so this potion would be redundant for those persons.
The player can elect to provide the whole party with Infravision by selecting "options", then "gameplay" and the "Enable group infravsion" option from the game menu.
This ability is widely regarded as fairly useless in the Baldur's gate gaming community, as can be found using various internet search engines and seen on various forums.

Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset has no "Potion of Infravision" listed in the Dungeons Masters Guide (DMG).
The Potion of Infravision is covered in the Encyclopedia Magica. This potion behaves differently with a shorter duration than the BG video game. See the external links.
