Pierce Magic lowers the target creatures Magic Resistance and cancels one spell protection of 8th level or lower. It lowers magic resistance by a maximum of 20%, at caster level 20.

Description[]

Pierce Magic
When this spell is cast upon a target creature there will be two major effects: First, the creature's Magic Resistance, if any, will be lowered by 1% per level of the caster; second, one spell protection of 8th level or lower affecting the creature, if any, will be canceled. For example, if this spell was cast by a 15th-level wizard, the target creature would lose 15% of its Magic Resistance from his current total (reducing it to 0 if less than that remains), and one 8th- or lower level spell protection affecting the creature would be dispelled. Spells affected by Pierce Magic are Minor Spell Deflection, Minor Spell Turning, Spell Deflection, Spell Turning, Minor Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity, and Globe of Invulnerability. The target's Magic Resistance, if any, does not affect this spell, nor do any of the spell protections. Magic Resistance remains lowered for 1 round per level of the caster.

Gameplay[]

This spell can be used to reduce a target's Magic resistance - even if they have no active spell protection.

When the spell is cast on a target, a spell removal animation graphic is played over the target, and a text message is displayed on the combat log reading: "Spell Protections Removed". This text appears even if the target had no spell protections present, and even if there were multiple spell protections active. Only one spell protection will be removed (from the list in the spell description above).

The spell can target non-detectable {hidden, invisible, sanctuaried) creatures.

Although the spell's internal components are not flagged to ignore Mirror Image, this spell does in fact bypass that illusionary protection.

A Spell Shield will block this spell, and then the shield will be consumed.

Spell Immunity: Abjuration will not block this spell, even though Pierce Magic is an abjuration school spell - however the Pierce Shield will remove the Spell Immunity. Any other spell protections still active on the target will require additional spell removal options to take them down, because the Spell Immunity is removed first, and Pierce Shield can only remove one spell protection per application.

The spell description is missing Shield of the Archons and Magic Resistance (spell) as spell protections that can be removed by Pierce Magic, but it will remove them.

Spell protections removed by Pierce Magic[]

Spell removal order[]

When a creature is protected by multiple spell protections, a Pierce Magic spell will remove one of those in the following order:

If two or more spell protections have equal spell levels, the Pierce Magic will randomly determine which spell protection is removed.

Example: - An enemy dragon is protected with Spell Turning, Globe of Invulnerability, and has an innate magic resistance of 60%. The level 12 party mage casts Pierce Magic at the dragon. The spell removes Spell Turning and lowers the dragon's magic resistance to 48%. The Globe of Invulnerability remains active on the dragon.

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, revising its effects and description. See below:

Pierce Magic
Level: 6
School: Abjuration
Range: Long
Duration: Special
Casting Time: 6
Area of Effect: 1 creature
Saving Throw: None

When this spell is cast upon a target creature there will be two major effects. The first is that it will dispel one spell protection of 8th level or lower from the creature. This will always dispel the highest level of spell protection on the target first. If the target has two or more protections tied for the highest level, the choice will be random. The second effect of the spell is that the creature’s magic resistance is temporary nullified. The resistance remains lowered for 2 rounds, and this effect cannot be negated in any way. The target’s magic resistance, if any, does not affect this spell.

The spell protection spells dispelled by Pierce Magic are: Minor Spell Deflection, Non-Detection, Minor Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Deflection, Dispelling Screen, Spell Shield, Globe of Invulnerability, Greater Spell Deflection, Shield of the Archons, and Mind Blank.

Note:The SR version of Pierce Magic removes all the Magic Resistance from the target creature, but only for two rounds. Enough time to conduct a well-timed attack? Absolutely.

With the Sword Coast Stratagems mod Pierce Magic can't target invisible or hidden creatures (with SCS or SR or both mods) without first exposing or revealing the target creature.
