When a wizard casts Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, he encloses a creature in a globe of shimmering force.
As of version 2.6 of the Enhanced Editions, this spell has been changed so that there's no save against the effect when cast on an ally or yourself. This includes so-called "GoodButRed" (as they're referred to behind-the-scenes) creatures who are technically allied to the party, but have red circles, such as the Demons gated in by the spells Cacofiend, Summon Fiend and Gate. That means you can easily (ie without a save and ignoring magic resistance) stop them after they've served their purpose by casting Otiluke's Resilient Sphere on them.
Effects[]
“ | Otiluke's Resilient Sphere When this spell is cast, the result is a globe of shimmering force that encloses the subject creature if it fails to Save vs. Spell. The resilient sphere will contain its subject for the duration of the spell. The sphere is completely immune to all damage; in fact, the only method of removing the sphere is a successful Dispel Magic. Hence, the creature caught inside the globe is completely safe from all attacks, but at the same time completely unable to affect the outside world. |

Gameplay[]
This spell grants the following effects to its target (if they fail the save, in the case of enemies):
- Hold Creature 2 (not to be confused with the much more common Hold Creature effect)
- Protection from 27 specific spells (such as Incendiary Cloud and including some effects from Wish),
- Invisibility (both normal and improved)
- Set attacks per round to 0
- Set movement rate to 0
- Immunity to damage
- Immunity to magical weapons
- Immunity to normal weapons
- Immunity to all spell schools
- Immunity to spells and effects from level 1 to 9
- Immunity to several secondary spell types (eg "offensive")
- Immunity to poison
- Set poison, (magical) fire, (magical) cold, electricity, acid, magic, slashing, crushing and piercing damage resistance to 100
- Set magic resistance to 100
Despite all of this, you can still be "hit" by a few abilities that can have certain side-effects. For example, a dragon's Wing Buffet is a nonmagical effect that can still "hit" (for no damage) the protected character through the sphere and can even inflict its short-duration nonmagical "sleep" effect on the character.
A few noteworthy consequences of this is the fact that such abilties that "hit" you through the sphere:
a) Will trigger contingencies with the condition "hit".
b) Will cause a Project Image clone to disappear, if the "hit" character is the one who originally cast the spell.
