Baldur's Gate Wiki

You, uh, you want your money, do you?

Ophyllis is the first assistant to sub-treasurer Zenk of the High Hall of Baldur's Gate, a position compromised by his vice as a careless gambler. To his credit, he is also a gifted raiser of funds.

While Gorion's Ward resides in the Ducal Palace, a Treasury Note informs them that all their money is securely stored in the palace treasury, under Ophyllis's care. Both the treasury and its anxious keeper can be found in the palace basement.

Involvement[]

I still don't know how it happened. The dog won every race it was in in the last five tendays. It should have won this one, easily, but—who brings their pet rabbit to a dog race? I mean really!

My Missed Fortune[]

When confronted, Ophyllis confesses to having gambled away all of Gorion's Ward's money, but vows to recover it and to meet them in front of the Ducal Palace before rushing off.

So long as he is not killed, Ophyllis then reappears several times to report on his misfortunes while attempting to repay the debt.

  • Ducal Palace Exterior: Ophyllis arrives battered and bloodied, claiming he was robbed by a band of refugees.
  • Coast Way Crossing (after the destruction of the Bridge) or Troll Claw Woods: he returns with a Gold Bust of Gorion's Ward as partial repayment.
  • Coalition Camp (after the siege): he appears once more, having somehow raised the full sum (+ 17gp) only to be robbed again. To compensate, he offers Ophyllis's Short Sword, the most valuable item in his personal chest.

Having so heard of his success in producing the owed gold, the party is meant to find it (along with a note from Ophyllis) in the Dragonspear Castle Keep First Floor. but due to a scripting error this never occurs.

Anyway, Ophyllis meets his end in the Coalition Camp; the journal reports:

My Missed Fortune
I should watch for the crusaders that slew Ophyllis.
Ophyllis has died trying to return my gold. If I wish to regain my lost fortune, I must seek out the crusaders who slew him.

Emptying the Treasury[]

If the treasury was looted during the events of Baldur's Gate, it is now refilled.

A Gorion's Ward seeking reimbursement for Ophyllis's failure may pick the treasury locks or obtain the Treasure Key from Ophyllis himself—by theft or by murder.

Trivia[]

Ophyllis's final note—unavailable in the standard game—reads:

The letters on this parchment are hand-written but blocky and efficient, utterly devoid of personality—the penmanship of one who deals more in numbers than in words. The note reads:

"Dear <CHARNAME>,

It took longer to collect the proper amount of gold than it should have, and far too long to return it to you. I cannot tell you how sincerely grateful I am for your patience in this matter. Here you should find all the monies owed you, plus an additional 17 gold pieces. I realize this small token in no way makes up for my my failure, but to try and find more would have been to delay repaying you even longer than I have already. I hope this finds you in good spirits and health. Thank you once again.

Best regards,

Ophyllis

1st Assistant to Sub-Treasurer Zenk of the High Hall, Baldur's Gate

P.S. If you don't remember me, I'm the fellow who misplaced your gold."
