Ogre Mages are found throughout Baldur's Gate and appear as intended enemies, in the Firewine Ruins for example, as well as a possible random encounter enemy in the Lonely Peaks or during travels between certain areas. Two stand alone NPC's - Droth and Kahrk - are a couple of formidable ogre mage enemies that may be encountered while exploring the map.
Ogre Mages (except Kahrk) are under level 6 and so especially vulnerable to the spell Command.
All of the mages share a majority of the same combat and protection stats (the sewer mage has a few differences). They mainly differ in the makeup of their spellbook, their race script, and whether or not they possess a undroppable/unstealable Sandthief's Ring. Most of them are also equipped with an undroppable/unstealable Bastard Sword which is used during melee combat. All of them will also drop three items of rich random treasure except for the sewer mage which drops treasure that is specific only to itself.
All of the following ogre mages are categorized by their creature code for ease of discussion.
OGREMA02 / OGREMA03[]
These ogre mages can be encountered as early as Chapter One (in the Firewine Ruins - OGREMA02) and during the events of Chapter Four (on the third level of the Cloakwood Mine - OGREMA03). They both have an allegiance of neutral as they will initiate dialogue before becoming hostile.
Gameplay[]
- They both have the MAGE6 race script for spell casting which gives them the ability to utilize the Fireball spell if the party has a single-class cleric in it and the cleric is within visual range of the mage. Otherwise the spell goes unused during battle.
- The Cloakwood Mines mage is equipped with the Sandthief's ring but only makes use of it for the dialogue and casting of its first spell.
- The Firewine Ruins mage is equipped with the undroppable/unstealable bastard sword, but drops a Scimitar upon death.
- The Cloakwood Mines mage is not equipped with the undroppable/unstealable bastard sword, instead it is equipped with a Katana +1 which is dropped upon death. However, the weapon is not visible in the creature image when equipped, so all attacks have the appearance of the mage slashing at its target with its hands.
Quests[]
- The Firewine Ruins mage is an antagonist in need of removal to satisfy the requirements of The Firewine Ruins quest.
OGREMA[]
This ogre mage creature file is used as one of five ogre mages found in a generic home located in South Baldur's Gate as well as the a potential random spawn enemy in the Lonely Peaks area and during travels between mainly southern areas of the map.
Gameplay[]
- The mage has the MAGE3 race script for spell casting which gives it the ability to utilize the Stinking Cloud spell if the party has a single-class cleric in it and the cleric is within visual range of the mage. Otherwise the spell goes unused during battle.
- The mage is equipped with the Sandthief's ring but only makes use of it for casting of its first spell.
- The mage is equipped with the undroppable/unstealable bastard sword, but drops a Scimitar upon death.
OGREMA_A-D[]
These four ogre mages comprise the remaining mages that are found in the generic home located in South Baldur's Gate. While they all maintain the same combat and defensive stats (OGREMA_D starts out with Neutral allegiance due to dialogue), their spellbooks all contain between 1 to 3 unique spells that aren't found in the other mages spellbook.

OGRMBA[]
This ogre mage is the creature found in the east sewers located under the city of Baldur's Gate. It has the weakest stats of any ogre mage found throughout the game as its Hit points, strength, number of attacks, and its THAC0 have all been reduced.
