Nevaziah is a Lich hiding in the Southern Dungeons below the Athkatla Graveyard. It appears during Find the Nether Scroll for Edwin quest. At first contact with the party the lich is neutral but becomes hostile when Edwin insists on demanding the Nether Scroll from him. Note that this scroll has no actual object in the game and isn't an "item" that can be placed into an inventory and carried or moved around.

Gameplay[]

This creature is reduced in spell casting potential, as the Lich will not utilize spells greater than level 5. Nevaziah has unique physical damage resistances and is extra vulnerable to fire damage. The Lich also cannot see through Invisibility.

In terms of the creature's immunities and general abilities, have a look on the Lich article for a run down.

Upon hostilities the creature may initially, if not disrupted, turn invisible with a Shadow Door. It may also attempt a Mirror Image. If it can, it will cast offensive spells such as Fireball, Cone of Cold, Lightning Bolt, Agannazar's Scorcher, Magic Missile, Stinking Cloud and Remove Magic. That is all it has in its script arsenal, aside from an Animate Dead (wizard) and a Monster Summoning III spell.

If Edwin is kept far enough away from the Lich (so as not to trigger Edwin's dialogue), then you can attack Nevaziah in a surprise assault and get the drop on the creature. To get the Nether Scroll, you must defeat the creature by violence. Once the creature is destroyed, then Edwin's dialogue should continue regarding the Scroll and keep the quest moving forward.

Sword Coast Stratagems mod revises Nevaziah to a level 14 Necromancer. In terms of spell selection and the "Smarter Mage" AI. SCS does in fact allow up to level 7 spell casts appropriate to a level 14 Necromancer. As is normal for SCS, an opening uninterruptible contingency is launched to raise some protective buffs. In the case of this lich, if a party member is under invisibility the lich will know someone approaching within range is invisible and cast a Oracle spell and may say "Strange... let's see what a little divination will show", or "Come out, spy... I can sense your presence".

If made hostile, the lich will launch its precast buff contingency consisting of Spell Immunity, Shield (spell), Spirit Armor, and Stoneskin. It will attempt a Protection From Magical Weapons cast afterwards, as well as the SCS lich innate ability "Fear Aura", which tics every two rounds continuously. Now that its buffs are up, if the lich is not yet dead or disabled it will go on the offensive. The script has a large variable response based on the target vulnerability assessment. The choice of spells is wide. A Remove Magic, Breach, Greater Malison may be cast to weaken a target. A Teleport Field is usual to break up the party's melee assault.

A Death Spell is scripted to banish summoned party creatures will occur. The Lich will also summon a Nabassu, or Shadows. It has a high probability of casting Cloudkill, Finger of Death (wizard) and Disintegrate. If a party member is up close in melee with the Lich, it will attempt a Vampiric Touch spell. All in all, except a much tougher encounter than the unmodified game.

With the Spell Revisions mod installed (which works with SCS), the lich will have the SR spell versions. For example, in its opening contingency it will have a "Dispel Shield" instead of Spell Immunity Abjuration. Instead of summoning a Nabassu, SR replaces that with a gated "Death Knight".
