Neutralize Poison is a 4th level priest spell. It heals the recipient for 10 Hit points and immediately cures various debilitating status effects.
Description[]
| “ | This spell removes all toxins from the body, both natural and magical in nature. When this spell is cast upon a poisoned individual, it immediately neutralizes any poison and restores 10 lost Hit Points. This spell will also cure any diseases that the target might be suffering from, as well as blindness and deafness. | ” |
Gameplay[]
The caster applies this spell to a single creature or self if desired - use the targeting cursor and 'click" to select the spell recipient.
When the spell recipient is touched, a brief color fade and characteristic healing 3D effect graphic renders on their sprite.
The spell recipient is immediately exposed to the curative and healing powers of the spell, which includes the following:
- Current hit points healed by 10.
- All Disease effects are cured, from many sources or origins (the same ones as the Cure Disease spell remedies).
- Cures the Poison status effect.
- Cures Blindness.
- Cures the Deafness effect.
The 2nd level priest spell Slow Poison will cure any and all poisons; this spell's advantage is that it heals additional status effects and restores HP, as well as having the shortest casting time (1) of all healing spells. It does lose the ability to cure intoxication, however.

Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition priest spell Neutralize Poison is a commonly known spell for clerics and druids.
However, the PnP spell version is limited to detoxification of poisonous items that might be touched, or to remove venom and effects from a victim creature - in the heat of battle the priest must roll to hit a creature with a touch in order to apply the neutralizing spell.
The PnP spell doesn't cure any diseases, blindness or heal hit points like the BG video game's spell version.
This spell is also reversable and can be cast as poison, likewise requiring a successful attack roll, and the victim is allowed a saving throw vs. poison. If the latter is unsuccessful, the victim is incapacitated and dies in one turn unless the poison is magically neutralized or slowed.
Bugs[]
- In the original Baldur's Gate and Shadows of Amn, Neutralize Poison would only remove the portrait icon and the recurring damage of diseases; it would not undo their secondary effects (such as the THAC0 penalty from a ghast), which had to be waited out for their duration. This was fixed in the Enhanced Editions.
Mod content[]
This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

Neutralize Poison

This spell removes all toxins from the body, both natural and magical in nature. When this spell is cast upon a poisoned individual, it immediately neutralizes any poison. In addition, for the duration of the spell, the recipient is immune to any poison it is exposed to, and spells like Poison and Cloudkill won’t affect the protected creature.
