Minor Spell Turning reflects spells that directly target the wizard, sending them directly back to their original source.
Description[]
| “ | Minor Spell Turning This spell is similar to the 7th-level Spell Turning, which causes the spells cast against the wizard to rebound upon the original caster. This affects a total of 4 spell levels. This includes spells cast from scrolls and innate spell-like abilities, but excludes the following: area effects that are not centered directly upon the wizard as well as area effects that are stationary such as Cloudkill and Stinking Cloud. As long as the spell is cast directly at the wizard it will be reflected back upon the caster. This spell will only affect up to 4th-level spells, but as long as there are levels remaining then the spell will be reflected. For example, if there is only 1 level left and a 3rd-level spell is cast at the wizard, the spell will be reflected while canceling the spell turning. This spell will not protect the caster from Dispel Magic, however it will not be affected by Dispel Magic either. |

Gameplay[]
The caster applies this spell to self only.
When the spell is finished, a white disc animation graphic is underfoot of the caster (for the duration of the spell), and their sprite will have a subtle color change effect for a few seconds.
A text display reads "Protected by Minor Spell Turning", and a character will have an icon (No. 65) titled "Spell Turning" on their portrait.
Additionally, a sound effect is audibled when the spell is cast.
The spell protects against some spells that are aimed as a single-target attack directed at the caster. However, the caster can cast spells on itself.
The limits of the Minor Spell Turning and its capacity to withstand and bounce spells back is as stated in the description, which is accurate.
The spell doesn't protect against area of effect spells such as Fireball and Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting.
It also bounces single-target beneficial spells by allies - so for example a Cure Critical Wounds by a party member is rebounded on the caster.
Any spell-removing magic attack can cancel the Minor Spell Deflection - the lowest-level one being Spell Thrust.
A Spell Shield can defend the Minor Spell Turning from being removed by spell-removing magic.
Minor Spell Turning is not affected by Dispel Magic effects - those effects go past the spell, and don't interact with the turning at all.
If Spell Turning is also active, it will override Minor Spell Turning. They are not cumulative, any turned spell will drain both. If both a turning spell and a deflection spell (Minor Spell Deflection or Spell Deflection) are active, then the turning will take priority; while charges of spell turning remain, the spell deflection will not be drained. The spell deflection will only trigger and be drained once the turning effect is exhausted.
This spell can't rebound a Magic attack type spell (such as Spell Thrust) back at the originator.

Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Wizard spell Minor Spell Turning has some significant differences from the BG game's version. For example, one to four (1d4) spell levels may be turned. The exact number is secretly rolled by the DM; the player never knows how effective the spell is. Also, ff the protected wizard and a spellcasting attacker both have spell turning effects operating, a resonating field is created that has variable bizarre side-effects, from fairly benign to catastrophic.
Bug[]
This spell's coding has an error and is set to execute a "Webbed" portrait icon on the caster's portrait - fortunately the spell coding overrides this by the correct internal icon placement configured by Beamdog, which is "hard coded" into the actual spell. So, not a noticeable bug actually.

Mod content[]
This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.
Spell Revisions mod has replaced the spell Minor Spell Turning with Spell Deflection. See below for description:
Spell Deflection
Level: 5
School: Abjuration
Range: Personal
Duration: 5 turns
Casting Time: 5
Area of Effect: Caster
Saving Throw: None
This abjuration spell causes any spells cast against the wizard to be absorbed and consumed. This affects a total of 9 spell levels but having 1 level left of protection means a 1st level spell would get absorbed, as well as a 7th level spell. Spells greater than 7th level will not be affected. This spell will not protect the caster from a dispel magic. However, it will not be affected by a dispel magic, either. This spell absorbs spells cast from scrolls and innate spell-like abilities but will not protect against area effect spells that are not centered directly upon the wizard (such as Fireball), or stationary area effect spells (such as Cloudkill and Stinking Cloud).
With Sword Coast Stratagems and Spell Revisions mods installed, Spell Deflection will absorb a Breach spell, just like any other single-target spell effect with a Power level rating between 1 and 9.
