Minor Spell Deflection protects the caster in a field of magical energy that deflects incoming spells.
Description[]
“ | Minor Spell Deflection This spell is similar to the 6th-level Spell Deflection, which causes the spells cast against the wizard to be absorbed and consumed. This affects a total of 4 spell levels. This includes spells cast from scrolls and innate spell-like abilities, but excludes area effects that are not centered directly upon the wizard as well as area effects that are stationary, such as Cloudkill and Stinking Cloud. As long as the spell is cast directly at the wizard, it will be absorbed. This spell will only affect up to 7th-level spells, but if it tries to absorb a spell that goes over its limit, the spell will fail and the spell deflection will be canceled. For example, if there is only 1 level left and a 3rd-level spell is cast at the wizard, the spell will be absorbed while canceling the spell deflection. |

Gameplay[]
The caster applies this spell to self only.
When the spell is finished, a swirling white animation graphic surrounds the caster (for the duration of the spell), and their sprite will have a subtle color change effect for a few seconds.
A text display reads "Protected by Minor Spell Deflection", and a character will have an icon (No. 67) titled "Spell Deflection" on their portrait.
Additionally, a sound effect is audibled when the spell is cast.
The spell protects against some spells that are aimed as a single-target attack directed at the caster. However, the caster can cast spells on itself.
The limits of the Minor Spell Deflection and its capacity to withstand spells is as stated in the description, which is accurate.
The spell doesn't protect against area of effect spells such as fireball or Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting.
It also blocks single-target beneficial spells by allies - so for example a touch range Cure Critical Wounds by a party member is not possible!
Any spell removing magic attack can cancel the Minor Spell Deflection - the most basic being Spell Thrust.
A Spell Shield can defend the Minor Spell Deflection from being removed by spell removing magic.
Minor Spell deflection is not touched by Dispel Magic effects - those effects go past the spell deflection, and don't interact with the deflection at all.
If Spell Deflection is also active, it will override Minor Spell Deflection. They are not cumulative, negating an incoming spell will drain both at the same time. If both a deflection spell and a turning spell (Minor Spell Turning or Spell Turning) are active, then the turning will take priority; while charges of spell turning remain, the spell deflection will not be drained. The spell deflection will only trigger and be drained once the turning effect is exhausted.

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset has no Wizard spell titled Minor Spell Deflection - the nearest equivalent would be Minor Spell Turning, a 4th level Wizard spell. It appears Bioware created this spell for the BG game.
Mod content[]

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, revising its effects and duration. See below for description:
Minor Spell Deflection
Level: 3
School: Abjuration
Range: Personal
Duration: 5 turns
Casting Time: 3
Area of Effect: Caster
Saving Throw: None
This abjuration spell causes any spells cast against the wizard to be absorbed and consumed. This affects a total of 6 spell levels but having 1 level left of protection means a 1st level spell would get absorbed, as well as a 4th level spell. Spells greater than 4th level will not be affected. This spell will not protect the caster from a dispel magic. However, it will not be affected by a dispel magic, either.
This spell absorbs spells cast from scrolls and innate spell-like abilities but will not protect against area effect spells that are not centered directly upon the wizard (such as Fireball), or stationary area effect spells (such as Cloudkill and Stinking Cloud).
