Marek is an assassin hired by the Iron Throne to kill Gorion's Ward and party. Unlike the other assassins, he will try to achieve this through poison instead of open battle as the antagonist of the Marek and Lothander quest.
Quest[]
Marek and Lothander[]
The first time you'll encounter Marek and his partner Lothander is when you travel to the eastern section of the district of Northeast Baldur's Gate. Marek will immediately initiate dialogue and instruct you to cease interfering with their employer's business. Then they both head off and disappear.
“ | First, let me introduce the two of us. I'm Marek and this is my companion, Lothander. I thought it would be nice for you to know our names, 'cause if you don't take our advice you'll be seeing more of us two. I know that you've been taking an active interest in destroying the Iron Throne, don't try to deny it. My companion and I are in the employ of the aforementioned Throne. We thought it would be polite to give you one last warning: Stop interfering with our employer's business. You can decide to disregard this warning, but if you do, it'll be the last decision you ever make. See ya later. | ” |
Once you've completed all of the necessary actions to solve Lothander's dilemma, he'll provide you with the location of Marek so you can obtain his half of the antidote.
“ | All right then, here's my half of the antidote. Marek, my partner, possesses the other half of the antidote. You'll find him at the Blushing Mermaid inn. I can't help you other than that. | ” |
— Lothander |
Marek is located on the second floor of the inn towards the rear of the gambling hall. This time you must initiate dialogue and then fighting commences.
“ | So you've come, I assume, to take the antidote. All you're going to accomplish is to hasten your death, but I think that isn't the foremost worry you have at the moment. | ” |
If you do not want to do this quest but still want to go to the area of the city Marek is in, you can simply kill him on sight to avoid getting poisoned at all. You also get almost 5k XP and some good loot (but you miss out on more XP and loot from the quest).
