The Magic Golem is a construct created by a mage. They are first encountered in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, or in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition if visiting Watcher's Keep before chapter 7.
Gameplay[]
This golem is mostly immune to all magical effects, spells, magical weapons of any type, and elemental damage.
See the InfoBox summary of immunities and protections.
The creature has a unique attack with a ranged weapon that manifests as a +3 enchanted ranged attack (using the beholder blast projectile), which must roll to hit a target.
If the weapon scores a hit, it inflicts Missile damage that is augmented by the golem's strength bonus.
The special on-hit effect of the weapon is to drain item charges (including weapons) that are in the character's quick item slots or worn/equipped.
Also, if the target has memorized Wizard spells available, one spell (starting at the highest level) will be expended and not be available until resting occurs.
The creature is otherwise vulnerable to normal weapons and fists (monk class may have magical fists/kick, which won't strike the golem).
Note that fist attacks won't actually slay the creature, as they deal stunning/non-lethal damage. Fist blows can make the creature fall down in a semi-unconscious state, at least for a period of time. Best to find a non-magical weapon or ammunition (any type will do) to finish it off.
The creature's battle action scripting attempts to keep a distance from attackers, staying out of melee range, so as to get better performance from its ranged attack.
Note[]
The golem's attack uses the same projectile as a Beholder blast, and thus, the Shield of Balduran can reflect it back (which won't be able to hit the golem, as it is a magical attack).

Mod content[]
- This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.
The Sword Coast Stratagems mod makes some revisions to this creature.
The golem is immune to the spells Lower Resistance, Pierce Magic, Pierce Shield, and Plant Growth.
The status effects Webbed and Entangle is added to the list of immunities.
Installation of the Golem Construction for Spellcasters mod revises Magic Golems and adds a special innate ability called "Wild Magic Flare" that is used at the outset of hostilities and directed at the first detected enemy - after a few rounds it can be used again.
The Flare can be blocked by Magic resistance, but there is no saving throw. The effects on the target are a varied collection of Wild magic possibilities rolled on a d100 percentile die.
