The Lich can be encountered in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, as early as chapter 2.
It can be found in some sort of a tomb or crypt behind a secret wall panel on the ground floor of the Crooked Crane Inn located in the Athkatla City Gates district.
Gameplay[]
When the party transitions to the new area, they'll observe a moderately sized rectangular shaped tomb of some kind - a macabre figure at the back stands before a large chest.
There is a stone sarcophagus in the center of the room as well.
The creature is a lich, and if he's able to see/detect a party member it will croak out a hoarse whisper, saying:
- Long have I rested in the halls below the Old City. Long have I been at peace. Your disturbance shall not go unpunished!
The lich will now change from neutral to hostile and if able, release its preparatory protective spell chain.
Once hostile, the creature will attempt to cast spells to destroy any intruders in the crypt.
See the InfoBox for a summary of conditions and spell types that are possible.
Note that this lich has no ability to dispel the party's protections or buffs, and it uses no spell removal magic. Use this to your advantage.
If the party is under some kind of invisibility, sanctuaried, or hidden, the lich will remain neutral and not even speak.
It is possible that a stealthy rogue could enter this crypt and investigate the chest and sarcophagus without alerting the undead mage - although it could expose the character as well, depending on what kind of action is taken. It is also possible to pickpocket this creature - if you dare.
The safest way to deal with the lich, is to be under the effects of a Protection From Undead scroll - with such a scroll the lich won't be able to find or target the interloping character and the monster could be killed with impunity with a simple magical weapon. Clearly this method is almost risk free, but don't expect it to be written into the annals of courage.
Another option is to simply get out of the crypt once it is known what is inside and stay out for now, especially if the party is not ready to face such a creature. Let's hope that the lich won't follow the party beyond its crypt.
Maybe it's better to pay a visit to this lich when the party is better equipped, after having acquired Azuredge or the Mace of Disruption first, and use them to destroy it.
Should the party destroy the lich, make sure any desired treasure is collected from the undead mage's robes and purse - and examine that big chest in the chamber too. Who better than a lich to have something worthwhile?

Mod content[]
- This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.
The Sword Coast Stratagems mod revises some aspects of the encounter with this lich. The first change is that one or more party members who initially enter the Crypt will not be able to leave this area until the lich is destroyed. Other party members who didn't transition with the first group cannot enter the Crypt until the lich is dead.
When a party member tries to leave or enter the Crypt while the lich is still viable - A text will display, reading: "An invisible wall of force has blocked the doorway."
SCS has raised the experience level of this lich to 30. The mod also assigns a mage specialty kit to the lich, which is randomly selected at installation of the mod, either Conjurer, Enchanter, Invoker or Necromancer.
The selected kit determines the available spells that can be cast by the lich.
The player's game difficulty selection and specific components installed will determine if this lich has access to mage High-level class ability use.
Regardless of what kit the lich has assigned, expect a wide variety of potential spells available, and that the creature will aggressively use dispel/remove magic. It can attempt more than one Breach, as well as various spell protection removers like Spell Thrust, Khelben's Warding Whip, and Ruby Ray of Reversal.
The lich will have use of prepared Minor Sequencer, Spell Sequencer, and Spell Trigger options.
Unlike the base game's lich, this one can See the invisible.
