A wizard uses the Larloch's Minor Drain spell to drain the life force from a creature and add it to his own. Gorion's Ward may gain this spell as a special innate ability in Baldur's Gate during dreams 1 and 2 with a reputation of 9 or lower.

Description[]

Larloch's Minor Drain
With this spell, the wizard drains the life force from a target and adds it to his own. The target creature suffers 4 damage, while the Mage gains 4 Hit Points. If the Mage goes over his maximum Hit Point total with this spell, he loses any extra Hit Points after 1 turn.

Gameplay[]

The spell does not work against most undead enemies.

The projectile moves very quickly, which makes it great to interrupt hostile spellcasters (and unlike Magic Missile it is not blocked by the Shield spell).

Larloch's minor drain can be blocked by Magic resistance and spell protections that intercept level 1 Power level effects, such as this spell. For example, a Minor Spell Deflection or Minor Globe of Invulnerability will block it.

The Bastard Sword Foebane +5 (the upgraded version) casts' a version of Larloch's Minor Drain on each successful hit. The sword's cast spell is not SPWI119.spl but SPIN104A.spl. The innate spell version bypasses Magic resistance. It is also missing the coding to ensure it won't affect undead. It needs to be fixed by Beamdog, and it has already been reported as of version 2.6.6.

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, revising its effects and scaling. See below for description:

Larloch’s Minor Drain
Level: 1
School: Necromancy
Range: Long
Duration: Special
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: 1 creature
Saving Throw: None

With this spell, the wizard drains the life force from a target and adds it to his own. The target creature suffers 2 points of damage, while the mage gains 2 hit points. For every two extra levels of the caster, the draining is augmented by 2 points (up to a maximum of 10 points at 9th level). If the mage goes over his maximum hit point total with this spell, he loses it after 1 turn.

Note:The SR spell version works as described and does not display the anomalies that the unmodified spell or Foebane exhibit in some game versions. It's coded in a different fashion.
