The Large Shield +2 is an enchanted shield. It offers an armor class bonus of +3 and, as with all large shields, a +1 bonus vs missile attacks.
Unlike other large shields, it only requires 10 strength to wear, not 15. This is because, as the item description says, it is specifically enchanted to be lighter.
This item appears in Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II.
In Baldur's Gate, it can be found in Durlag's Tower on the fourth underground level in the area with the carpet trap. This shield and the Shield of the Falling Stars are the best shields found in the game; this shield has a better general AC bonus, but the Shield of the Falling Stars offers better protection against missiles.
In Baldur's Gate II, this item can be found in the ruins of Firkraag's Maze, although it has a different appearance and a higher weight. It will be dropped by a group of relic hunters during the Samia's Proposal side quest, wielded by the Ogre/Orog Chak. You can also purchase it from the "special wares" inventory of Ribald Barterman, or from the bartender in the Tankard Tree.
In BG2EE Fadell Ironeye has this shield in her inventory within the Red Wizard Enclave.
In-game description before identification[]
“ | A large shield inlaid with a golden griffin. This shield, also known as the kite shield or tower shield, is a massive metal shield reaching nearly from the chin to the toe of the user. It must be firmly fastened to the forearm and the shield hand must firmly grip it at all times. Naturally, this precludes use of the shield hand for anything but holding the body shield in place. Strangely though, this shield feels unnaturally light for its size. | ” |
In-game description after identification[]
“ | Large shield +2: This shield was commissioned from the finest dwarven smiths by Pellan of Tyr, a renowned paladin who was known for his unquestioning courage and total lack of common sense. Upon hearing that a red dragon was ravaging the countryside, Pellan mounted his horse and rode off to do battle. Pellan and his armor digested readily but the shield gave the dragon severe stomach cramps. He coughed it up and lay it in his treasure pile for several years until it was retrieved by Pellan's son, a paladin who knew when to sneak. The superior craftsmanship is supplemented by a permanent lightness spell, which makes the shield very easy to wield. | ” |
Notes[]
- In Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, the identified name of this shield is changed to Pellan's Shield +2.
- In Baldur's Gate II, this shield has a weight of 10 lbs. In the Enhanced version, the description erroneously states it has a weight of 4.
