Yap! Grrr grr... yip yip yip yap! Look, we don't speak Common, all right?! *snarl* Yip yip yap!

— Kobold

Kobolds are small, reptilian humanoids that can be found in many areas of the Sword Coast and Amn, most notably near Nashkel and the Firewine Ruins. Though not usually dangerous on their own, they are always encountered in packs and can easily overwhelm low-level parties. They attack with short swords and shortbows, and their Commandos often use Arrows of Fire. They are often compared to dogs, and are distinguishable by their signature yipping sound.

Trivia[]

  • In old Germanic folklore, kobolds were malicious mine spirits often blamed for toxic compounds found among ores. The element cobalt, first encountered as part of such compounds, was named after those spirits. The superstitions may have inspired the role kobolds play poisoning iron in the Nashkel Mines.
  • The offical website for the original game, now archived, had – in addition to some combat-related statistics – the following information about these creatures:[1]

Kobolds are a cowardly, sadistic race of short humanoids that vigorously contest the human and demi-human races for living space and food. They especially dislike gnomes and attack them on sight.

Barely clearing 3 feet in height, kobolds have scaly hides that range from dark, rusty brown to a rusty black. They smell of damp dogs and stagnant water. Their eyes glow like a bright red spark and they have two small horns ranging from tan to white. Because of the kobolds' fondness for wearing raggedy garments of red and orange, their non-prehensile rat-like tails, and their language (which sounds like small dogs yapping), these fell creatures are often not taken seriously. This is often a fatal mistake, for what they lack in size and strength they make up in ferocity and tenacity.
