Kitthix is a black spider that can be summoned once per rest with the Black Spider Figurine during the Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn campaign and, if the figurine is imported, also later during Throne of Bhaal.
Kithix appears a semi-intelligent huge spider and will obey its master's commands for one hour or until slain.
Gameplay[]
Kitthix is a controlled creature and allied with the summoner's party with a green circle - the creature can last an hour before being "unsummoned" from the map. If it is killed, it leaves a corpse on the map.
Like almost all summoned creatures, they cannot transition to new area maps with the party, nor can they clear the fog of war, or interact with objects, open/close doors etc. - they can be ordered to move to a target or location, and attack, or give no orders at all and let the creature's own AI decide what to do.
The creature has its own simplistic AI, and unless ordered by the player to do something else, the spider will either move to the nearest enemy it can detect and attempt to bite it, or if the nearest enemy is more than 7 feet away it will use its Phase Spider dimension door power to teleport jump to the enemy, and then bite. This ability can be used at will.
On the other hand, if the spider is ordered to move or attack a particular creature, then it will ambulate on its legs to that target and attack.
When attacking in melee, the spider's bite can apply a Poison status effect, see the InfoBox for details - note that this attack is a non-magical and unenchanted bite weapon for the purposes of what it can strike.
Kitthix has two uses of its innate spell ability called Web Tangle but the player has to initiate this, by selecting the spider's special ability menu and activating the spell icon and then designating the targeted creature with a cursor. This can apply a webbing effect that can cause a Paralyze and Webbed status effects to a target for two rounds, making them Helpless for that period. It's a magical effect, so it can be blocked by Magic resistance, and a saving throw is allowed for the target to avoid it - see the linked article for particulars and details.
Notes[]
- In the original Shadows of Amn without its expansion Throne of Bhaal, the poison might ignore not only magic, but also poison resistance - this is changed with the installation of Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal and in the Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, where the poison is natural, so that magic resistance is ignored.
- Kitthix' immunity against paralysis in general is removed in the Enhanced Edition.
