Karthis al-Hezzar is a Tethyrian human male merchant who lived near the city of Saradush - he can be first encountered when the party travels to the North Forest during Chapter Eight.
| “ | Excuse my manners, however. I am Karthis al-Hezzar, a merchant who is just traveling through. I normally take the road through Saradush, but that's been closed with all the trouble there. | ” |
Gameplay[]
In Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, if you save him from Yaga-Shura's soldiers, he will move toward the PC and initiate dialogue - giving thanks for saving his life.
Select whatever dialogue options you desire and ask any questions allowed as well.
For not demanding a reward, the party receives 1,000 gp and +1 to your Reputation. If a reward is demanded, he'll provide a tidy sum 4,240 gold, but your reputation will not change. Either way you will also be able to buy his wares.
On the other hand, if the Ward decides to go evil-mode on the merchant and say "Yes, well, after I kill you and loot your gold, it won't worry you quite so much" then Karthis will respond with "Wh-whaaat? Aiiieee! More hoodlums! Waukeen preserve me!" he'll run away - and in fact several potions are created in his inventory, as well as 5,640
Gold Piece
Currency in the Baldur's Gate series., and he'll be under the influence of an automatically applied "runrun" spell effect bestowing extra movement modifier value and improved haste. Kill him if you can, but he's a very fast-moving fat man right now.
He sells many magical items that are not available from most other merchants. Additionally, he pays the best rates for items sold to him.
Stealing from the merchant is possible, both pick pocketing and shop lifting - failure at stealing from his store will result in a 2-point Reputation penalty, and he'll go hostile, even though he's also treated as an innocent. Hostility may result in more reputation loss if he's killed and obviously this shutters any further opportunity to do any shopping/selling.
