Jhor the Bleeder is a unique magical and enchanted Bastard Sword +2 available only during Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition during chapter 5. It's also available if playing the The Black Pits II: Gladiators of Thay.
Description[]
| “ | This blade belonged to Ho Mang, a traveler from Kara-Tur who accepted dubious service at courts throughout Faerûn. Skilled in "persuasion," he would use this sword to perform the "Death Of A Thousand Cuts," an ancient ritual from his homeland involving a lengthy series of small, painful incisions. The properties of the blade prevent blood from clotting, and the victim slowly bleeds to death. The sword was stolen, and its whereabouts have been a mystery until now. | ” |
Gameplay[]
This blade is a +2 enchanted weapon that inflicts 2d4+2 Slashing damage on any successful hit, and the weapon provides a 2-point THAC0 bonus as well. The wielder's Strength attribute can modify the to hit and damage of this weapon as well.
While equipped, the weapon will pulse and glow in the wielder's hand.
Each damaging hit with the weapon exposes the target to a Poison status effect - although this effect is meant to actually be a "bleeding" effect, and not some kind of toxin, the game engine is utilizing the State: Poisoned mechanic to simulate the bleeding - if the effect is applied, a text is displayed <Target name>: Poison - a player character affected will display an icon (No. 137) titled "Bleeding" on their portrait.
Assuming the weapon actually applies some slashing damage to the target, then and only then will the status effect be applied - this is a special add-on coding with this status effect, to simulate the fact that a slashing wound is needed to start any bleeding, so for example, a Stoneskin defense stops the slashing damage, and the effect won't be applied through the stoneskin.
Once the bleeding effect is applied to the victim, 1 Poison damage is inflicted every three seconds, for five rounds - there is no saving throw - each successful instance of this bleeding will be cumulative with other strikes from the weapon, but each strike has its own timer and expiration. Obviously, multiple damaging hits from Jhor can be quite devastating to a victim over time, as the victim bleeds out.
As is the case of any poison status effect, the on-going bleeding effect can be stopped with an application of Slow Poison (spell) or an Antidote or similar (which rarely occurs by the AI in an unmodified game).
Creatures that are 100% resistant to Poison damage will not bleed from this blade's strikes, and Golems or Undead are immune as well.
Notes[]
A victim under a Haste effect will suffer more frequent bleeding damage per round. See the status effect page for details.
If the wielder can use the Poison Weapon ability, then this will work independently of Jhor's bleeding effect - the two effects don't interfere with each other.
