Invisibility Purge is a 3rd level priest spell. It is available in all Baldur's Gate games.
It is nearly identical to the 2nd level wizard spell Detect Invisibility but has a longer casting time and different text display messaging.
Description[]
“ | Any invisible creatures within the area of effect have their invisibility dispelled. This includes creatures under the effects of Improved Invisibility, Shadow Door, Invisibility, Mislead, and so on. | ” |
Gameplay[]
Upon casting this spell, a projectile launches upon the caster that applies a series of effects in an area around the caster - stretching out to a very large distance in all directions.
All non-party creatures in the area of effect will have their invisibility "cured" (removed) - in technical terms this means that the "State: Invisibility" and "State: Improved Invisibility" will be removed from the creature, instantly.
The spell also applies a brief lighting effect and color fade upon each non-party creature's sprite, and a sound effect is audibled.
A text is displayed on the player's screen log reading "Invisibility Dispelled".
The caster will also show a 3D graphic render over their sprite similar to the True Seeing spell.
This spell bypasses Magic resistance, and its internal spell effects have 0 Power level and thus are not subject to spell protections such as a Minor Globe of Invulnerability, or the innate spell level protections of some creatures, such as a Lich.
A creature under stealth/Hide in shadows will also be revealed.
A creature that is protected by the Non-Detection spell or effect is immune to this spell.
Invisibility Purge doesn't remove Sanctuary.
Additionally, as this spell functions as an instant effect, a creature can become invisible (or again) as soon as this spell's effect is finished.
A creature that has an always on innate invisibility, such as the Invisible Stalker won't really be affected by this spell. It will still be invisible right before the spell, and right after the spell finishes.
Notes[]
- The spell description states that its range is the "visual range of the caster"; although the spell is applied to the caster, and the spell's Area of Effect (AoE) radiates from their sprite - the actual radius of the spell's effects is well beyond the caster's visual detection range.
Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition priest spell Invisibility Purge is uncommon for clerics, but common for priests with access to the sphere of Wards, according to the Tome of Magic.
All invisible creatures who enter an area enchanted with invisibility purge instantly become visible - the PnP spell establishes a fixed warded area lasting 1 turn per level that purges invisibility from any who enter it - the BG video game went with a one-time instantaneous effect instead.
Invisible creatures or persons within the area of effect when invisibility purge is cast remain invisible; however, if such creatures exit the area of effect and later re-enter, they instantly become visible. Such creatures also lose any natural ability to turn invisible as long as they remain within the area of effect.
Creatures who are invisible in their natural state or have no visible form (such as invisible stalkers) are not affected by this spell.
Mod content[]

Spell Revisions mod has changed this Divine spell, revising its area of effect, duration, casting time, spell school, effects and description. See below:
Invisibility Purge
Level: 3
School: Abjuration
Sphere: Wards
Range: Personal
Duration: 5 rounds
Casting Time: 3
Area of Effect: 30’ radius
Saving Throw: None
Instantly and once each round for 5 rounds after this spell is cast, all concealed enemies within the area of effect will have their invisibility dispelled. Invisible objects carried into the warded area will also become visible. This spell does not reveal illusions or enable the caster to see through physical objects. Magic resistance does not affect this spell.
For the Druid/Ranger/Shaman classes, SR adds a new divine level 1 spell for use to find invisible and hidden enemies, as described below:
Faerie Fire
Level: 1
School: Evocation
Sphere: Weather
Range: Long
Duration: 4 rounds
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: 5’ radius
Saving Throw: Spell negates
When this spell is cast, a pale glow surrounds and outlines all enemies within the area of effect, making their position and movements easily visible. Outlined creatures do not benefit from the concealment normally provided by darkness, invisibility, or similar effects, and suffer a -2 penalty to AC. Those who succeed at a saving throw vs. spell are totally unaffected by the spell. The light is too dim to have any special effect on undead or dark-dwelling creatures vulnerable to light. The faerie fire does not cause any harm to the objects or creatures thus outlined.
