Invisibility will cause the targeted creature to vanish from normal and infrared sight.
The invisibility applied by the potion of invisibility uses the same effect.
Description[]
“ | This spell causes the creature touched to vanish from sight and be undetectable by normal vision or even infravision. Of course, the invisible creature is not magically silenced, and certain other conditions can render the creature detectable. Even allies cannot see the invisible creature or its gear, unless these allies can normally see invisible things or employ magic to do so. Items dropped or put down by the invisible creature become visible; items picked up disappear if tucked into the clothing or pouches worn by the creature. The spell remains in effect until it is magically broken or dispelled, until the recipient attacks a creature, or until 24 hours have passed. The caster cannot perform any actions that manipulate the environment around him, such as opening doors, disarming a trap, or opening a chest. The caster can, however, cast defensive spells on himself and fellow party members. And if he attacks, he immediately becomes visible, although the invisibility enables him to attack first. | ” |
Gameplay[]
Different from Hide In Shadows, the invisibility state granted by spells or items behaves in similar fashion to the priest spell Sanctuary. The following actions may be performed without breaking the invisible and sanctuary state:
- Open doors - Sanctuary characters may also open chests, pick locks and pick pockets (failed cut-purse attempts still aggro the target).
- Turn undead, detect illusion, detect trap, disarm trap, Bard song (The last one in classic game versions only).
- Self-targeting spells, abilities and items, such as Mirror Image, Draw Upon Holy Might, Melf's Minute Meteors, Fire Seeds, Harm, Blade Barrier, Kai, Potion of Healing, and Vhailor's Helm.
- Self-directed, single-target spells, abilities and items, such as Cure Light Wounds, Protection From Evil, Improved Haste, Strength.
- Self-centered AoE defensive, enchanting spells, abilities and items, such as Protection From Evil, 10' Radius.
- Exceptions do exist.
Invisible creatures cannot be targeted by spells that are directed at a single target - whether hostile or beneficial. An exception is discussed below.
For example, a priest cannot heal an invisible mage with a touch spell, but the mage can still receive buffs and cures that apply to the entire party. If an enemy is in the process of casting a single-target spell at someone who then turns invisible before the mage is finished, then the spell usually fails.
However, one targeting exception in the unmodified game applies to Spell Protection removing spells (Magic Attack type). Spells such as Spell Thrust, Secret Word, Pierce Magic and others can target invisible and hidden creatures. The Breach spell on the other hand, can't target an invisible creature. These inconsistencies can lead to beginning player confusion.
Making a melee attack from invisibility gives a 4 point THAC0 bonus to the first attack.
Spell Immunity: Diviation: protects the invisible character from being revealed by any Divination Attack type spell or ability, such as Invisibility Purge, Detect Illusion, or True Sight / True Seeing.
To quickly break the invisible & sanctuaried state by having the character "talk to itself".
Position invisible party members to block the choke point and attack from safety with extended reach two-handed weapons, missile attacks or spells. Other fun tactics include surrounding a single foe with four invisible party members, effectively locking it in place.
The more powerful version of this spell is Improved Invisibility, which has a shorter duration but additional benefits.
Some creatures, mostly powerful bosses, can completely ignore any kind of invisibility/stealth and can still target you.[1]
Other ways of applying the normal Invisibility effect[]
- Potion of Invisibility
- Invisibility, 10' Radius (multiple characters)
- Pixie Dust (multiple characters)
Ways to cancel Invisibility on an enemy (see also Category:Anti-illusion attacks)[]
- Illusion removers, such as Detect Invisibility, Invisibility Purge, Detect Illusion (spell), Oracle, True Seeing, True Sight.
- Glitterdust
- Items that apply some of the above spells, like Gem of Seeing.
- Find Traps / Detect Illusion ability of Thieves, Shamans and Dark Moon Monk.
- Dispel Magic and Remove Magic, because invisibility is in general a dispellable magical effect.
- Some of those counters can be blocked by the Non-Detection spell / Cloak of Non-Detection.

Invisibility

School: Illusion
Range: Touch
Duration: Special
Casting Time: 2
Area of Effect: 1 creature
Saving Throw: None
This spell causes the creature touched to vanish from sight and be undetectable by normal vision or even infravision. Of course, the invisible creature is not magically silenced, and certain other conditions can render the creature detectable. Items dropped or put down by the invisible creature become visible, items picked up disappear if tucked into the clothing or pouches worn by the creature. The caster cannot perform any actions that manipulate the environment around him such as opening doors, disarming traps, or opening chests. An invisible creature can drink a potion or cast non-attack spells centered on himself and remain invisible, but he cannot attack nor cast spells on other targets without ending the spell. The spell remains in effect until it is magically broken or dispelled, until the recipient attacks any creature, or until 8 hours have passed.
