A creature will become intoxicated if they drink too much at an inn or tavern, or if they are under the effects of the Wish spell that causes mass intoxication.
Effects[]
- 0-49 intoxication: no bonuses or penalties
- 50-59 intoxication: -2 luck and +2 morale
- 60-69 intoxication: -4 luck and +4 morale
- 70-79 intoxication: -6 luck and +6 morale
- 80-89 intoxication: -8 luck and +8 morale
- 90-99 intoxication: -10 luck and +10 morale
- 100 intoxication (max): -12 luck and +12 morale
Tavern drinks[]
When drinking at a tavern, how much each drink adds to a creature's intoxication value is based on their constitution score, from 2 per drink at 24 con to 100 per drink at 1 con.
The intoxication value from tavern drinks decreases by 1 every 12.5 seconds. The intoxicated icon shows up when the value reaches 50, and disappears when luck and morale modifiers reach zero, which is at value 49, ideally. The icon may stay an extra 150 seconds but the timer is still running in the background. It's possible the timer is influenced by haste or slow status (double or halve the timer), saving and loading may also reset the timer, because frequency-based timers are often cleared upon exiting game.
Causes[]
- Tavern drinks: Intoxication that decreases over time
- Murky Potion of Healing: +100 intoxication
- Level 9 Wish spell's mass intoxication: +100 intoxication to all creatures within an area for 4 hours.
Mass intoxication is ideal for taking advantage of the great Luck penalty imposed. The party can either be protected from its effect with Minor Globe of Invulnerability (Original BG2 only), or healed afterwards with cures listed below, both alternatives being available party-wide through Limited Wish. Beware not to use the Intoxication wish in an area with neutral NPCs, though.
Cure[]
Cured naturally by resting. Some spells can instantly cure intoxication, they are:
- Slow Poison
- Heal
- Limited Wish, "I wish for my entire party to be healed"
In Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, most healing spells cure intoxication. To the list above can be added:
- Cure Light Wounds
- Cure Medium Wounds
- Cure Serious Wounds
- Cure Critical Wounds
- Mass Cure
- Wish: Heal everyone within area
- A Priest of Tyr's Exaltation ability
And items or abilities from:
Only Exaltation removes the intoxicated portrait icon, but all of the above cures do remove intoxication correctly.
Note: If you want to double-check that the effect was indeed removed, place the mouse cursor over the healed character and press CTRL+M. A lot of debug information will appear if you enabled the Console "cheat" keys. Intoxication affects Luck so, if healing failed, the line "Current Luck (with all Modifiers)" should show a negative integer.
