Baldur's Gate Wiki
For the status effect, see Infravision.

The wizard spell Infravision gives the target creature the ability to temporarily see more clearly in the dark.

Description[]

Infravision
Upon the casting of this spell the recipient gains the ability to see with infravision, just as an elf or a dwarf would. This effect lasts for the duration of the spell or until dispelled.

Gameplay[]

The caster applies this spell to a single creature, or self if desired.

After the spell is cast, the spell recipient's sprite will show a brief lighting effect and color fade graphic, as well as a text is display reading "Infravision".

A player character with this spell active shows an icon (No. 114) titled "Infravision" on their portrait for the duration of the spell.

Additionally, a sound effect is audibled when the spell is cast, and another when it expires.

The spell applies a "State: Infravision" {Effect code No. 63) to the recipient.

This state makes all visible creatures with body heat that are currently in a "shadowed" part of the area receive a "warm" (red-shifted) overlay.

Body heat is determined by a creature's animation (INI file), and the term "shadowed" is determined by each area's Light Map - some areas have a separate Light Map for "nighttime" hours.

The infravision state is basically a cosmetic effect, and doesn't provide any tangible gameplay changes, bonuses, or penalties; for instance, it doesn't affect detection ranges, visual range, stealth, Hide in Shadow, THAC0, spell casting, targeting etc.

If the player selects a party member who has this spell active, then any visible creatures in detection range will have the warm reddish overlay presented if the creatures are in a shadowed area.

Note that Elf. Half-elf, Dwarf, and Gnome player characters have this ability innately "hard coded" into their racial creature file, so this spell would be redundant for those persons.

The player can elect to provide the whole party with Infravision by selecting "options", then "gameplay" and the "Enable group infravsion" option from the game menu.

This spell is widely regarded as fairly useless in the Baldur's gate gaming community, as can be found using various internet search engines and seen on various forums.

There is at least one area in the Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear game where having Infravsion active will reveal something hidden otherwise.

However, if the player enjoys the warm red glow appearance of creatures in shadowed areas, then this spell is for you. See the Link here for a with infravision and without infravision screenshots.
