Ice Salamanders are a species of extraplanar reptilian humanoids that resemble blue-skinned humans with horns from the waist up and giant, blue-scaled serpents from the waist down. They hail from the Paraelemental Plane of Ice and are the icy counterpart to the common Salamander. The assigned class is Water Elemental.

Involvement[]

Ice Salamanders are a rare encounter but can be found in a select few areas:

Variants[]

Gameplay[]

One or more Ice Salamanders will be summoned by a unique glabrezu that is encountered on the Watcher's Keep Teleport Maze. This creature (TELICESA.cre) has different hit points, XP and THAC0, otherwise all other values are the same.

These creatures advance toward detected enemies and engage in melee combat with their spear weapon.

Trivia[]

Ice Salamanders were invented by Black Isle, first debuting in Icewind Dale before appearing in Shadows of Amn. The closest equivalent to such a creature in the tabletop of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is the Frost Salamander, a creature originally from the Mystara setting which resembles a massive, multi-legged lizard - something like a blue-white basilisk in appearance.

Mod content[]

The Sword Coast Stratagems mod makes only minor revisions to the Ice Salamander (including both varieties). First, it assigns a new default script for smarter tactical targeting, threat recognition, and opponent vulnerability assessments. Second, it changes the Spear weapon proficiency to 3 pips, and assigns 2 pips for two-handed weapon fighting style. This will improve the creature's melee combat abilities over the unmodified version.

Installation of the Tower of Deception mod populates one dungeon level with various monsters, and you will encounter both Fire and Ice Salamanders within.
