This page is about the priest spell. For the innate ability usable by a Priest of Tempus, see Holy Power (ability).
Holy Power is a 4th level priest spell only usable by cleric and paladin classes. It imbues the priest with the strength and skill of a fighter of the same level.
Description[]
| “ | Through this spell, the caster imbues himself with the strength and skill of a Fighter of the same level. The priest’s Strength is set to 18/00—even if it is normally higher—his THAC0 becomes that of a Fighter of the same level, and he gains 1 temporary Hit Point for every level he has attained. This will last for the duration of the spell or until successfully dispelled. | ” |
Gameplay[]
The caster applies this spell to self only.
When the spell cast is finished, the a "holy pillar of light" graphic renders onto the priest, as well as a brief color glow.
A player character will show an icon (No. 60) titled "Holy Power" on their portrait for the spell's duration.
At this time the spell's effects will modify three separate values upon the caster:
- Strength attribute is set to 18/00 - even if it may have been greater than that before the spell cast.
- The caster's base THAC0 modifier is set to a specific value, commensurate with that of a Fighter class of the same level as the priest's caster level - For example, a 7th level Cleric has a base THAC0 of 16, and this spell changes it to that of a 7th level Fighter, which is 14, which improves the caster's base THAC0.
- An extra +1 Hit point is added to the caster's maximum hit point modifier for each level of the caster, from +7 up to +20 - these extra HPs aren't permanent, and disappear when the spell expires or is removed.
The spell has a variable duration, dependent on the caster's priest level, lasting up to 20 rounds - a sound effect will audible signifying the end of the spell.
This spell isn't cumulative with another Holy Power spell - they won't "stack" effects, and the most current casting replaces the previous spell cast.
This spell can be removed with any applicable Dispel Magic effect.
Notes[]
- In the original Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal, this spell's maximum HP boost was cumulative with itself. In the Enhanced Editions, it does not stack with itself.
- The THAC0 bonus's usefulness is heavily dependent on the level of the caster and intuitively is almost non-existent for Fighter / Cleric and Cleric / Ranger multi-class characters.
- The spell does not increase the number of attacks per round to what a fighter of that level would have.
- This spell is particularly useful for helping a Cleric hit a target with a "touch attack" spell weapon, for example, Cause Serious Wounds, or Slay Living - as the single-hit "weapons" created by those spells aren't affected by the strength attribute at all, so STR-boosting spells like Draw Upon Holy Might and Righteous Magic don't actually help, whereas Holy Power will.

Through this spell, the caster imbues himself with the strength and skill of a fighter of the same level. The priest’s strength is set to 18/00, even if it is normally higher, his THAC0 becomes that of a fighter of the same level, and he gains 1 temporary hit point for every level he has attained. The caster gains extra attacks as a fighter of the same level, thus an extra half an attack per round at 7th level and another half attack per round at 13th level. This lasts for the duration of the spell or until successfully dispelled. Multiple castings of this spell are not cumulative.
Note: this spell does not give any extra attacks to multi-classed or dual-classed fighter/clerics or ranger/clerics, as they normally gain additional attacks per round due to their fighter or ranger levels.
