Hobgoblins are creatures who can be found almost everywhere across the Sword Coast, Amn, Tethyr and indeed, most of Faerûn. They almost always appear in groups. Some of them only engage in melee combat and they don't carry any ranged weapons, while archers carry both melee and ranged weapons. These variations will engage in ranged attack first and only switch to melee attack if their ammunition runs out or they are engaged in melee combat.
Hobgoblins for the most part are not a significant threat to low-level parties as long as they are encountered in small numbers or party members have decent amounts of hit points. When slain, hobgoblins will drop Leather or Studded Leather Armor, a helmet, a Bastard Sword, and some middle-grade random treasure. Archers will also drop a Shortbow and Arrows and some will drop Arrows of Biting too (contingent upon the fact that all arrows aren't used up in battle).
The typical type of Hobgoblin (also referred to as Hobgoblin (fighter) due to the fact it only carries a sword), who's stats are in the infobox on this page, is the most common hobgoblin variant encountered in Baldur's Gate.

Trivia[]
- The offical website for the original game, now archived, had – in addition to some combat-related statistics – the following information about these creatures:[1]
Hobgoblins are a fierce humanoid race that wage a perpetual war with the other humanoid races. They are intelligent, organized, and aggressive. The typical hobgoblin is a burly humanoid standing 6 1/2 feet tall. Their hairy hides range from dark reddish-brown to dark gray. Their faces show dark red or red-orange skin. Large males have blue or red noses. Hobgoblin eyes are either yellowish or dark brown while their teeth are yellow. Their garments tend to be brightly colored, often bold, blood red. Any leather is always tinted black. Hobgoblin weaponry is kept polished and repaired.
