Hectan is a NPC located in The Tankard Tree in the city of Saradush. He can be engaged in conversation if initiated by a party member.

Gameplay

The party might notice a solitary man garbed in leather armor in the The Tankard Tree bar area and decide to speak with the man.

Dialogue options are limited, although questions are allowed to inquire about Melissan or Gromnir Il-Khan - always a good way to collect some info in a new location - however, seems as though this bar patron isn't very informed or forthcoming with anything else of note.

If the party has taken on the Lazarus's missing spellbook side quest, then at some point Hectan will be visited and interacted with again. That information is covered on the quest article.

The Ward suspects that Hectan is lying about not having the spellbook, clonks him over the cranium with a war hammer, and finds Lazarus's property. No one in the tavern seems to care about the violent act. The mighty bhaalspawn has slain a 1st level thief, all hail the hero of Baldursgate!

Speaking with Hectan reveals he's a cheery fellow, at least he seems that way - if spoken to without having accepted the quest, the guy doesn't seem to know anything of Melissan or Gromnir when asked.

If pursuing the questline, and promising Hectan some pain (with a party Rep <10), Hectan caves to the threat, admits to taking the book, but says he doesn't have it on him etc.
