Gromnir Il-Khan is a lawful neutral Half-orc in the original Throne of Bhaal, and chaotic neutral alignment in the Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition – He's also a Bhaalspawn (although not one of The Five) and the current leader of Saradush during Yaga-Shura's siege of the city. Being possibly insane during his first encounter with Gorion's Ward, he was inevitably killed by the latter.
“ | Gromnir knows a stranger came to Saradush, pretty Melissan. Another Bhaalspawn. You must think Gromnir too stupid not to remember there is no way in or out of this city, mmm? | ” |
Backstory[]
Gromnir locked him and his best troops inside his castle when the unwinnable siege of Saradush began. Though he became insane and deluded and was executing people for no reason, his words against Melissan proved to be true, saying she is untrustworthy and plotting. He will be killed by Gorion's Ward, as they were affiliated with Melissan.
Gameplay[]
Gromnir will eventually be found by the party in a sort of Throne Room within the Saradush castle, an area titled Gromnir's Hideout. Several other supporting characters are present, including Melissan. A cut scene will initiate when the party enters the Gromnir's Hideout area - various dialogue will be presented.
The pressure builds and eventually Gromnir is unwilling to accept any other dialogue, and he'll become hostile, along with certain allies in the lair. The party is forced to fight here in the throne room.
Gromnir is a melee fighter, and the game scripts him with the ability to apply Barbarian Rage on self initially, and again further into the battle. When his Hit points drop to a predetermined level, the bhaalspawn will utilize healing potions equipped in the "quick slots". This can occur more than once.
As this creature dual wields enchanted morning stars, he can actually strike up to five times in a round, so be aware of the significant damage he can inflict. His adjusted THACO is quite formidable and can hit party members routinely even with impressive Armor Class ratings.
If defeated, Gromnir can be pilfered for some unique and interesting loot, as displayed in the InfoBox.
Notes[]
- Gromnir is assigned a Kensai kit but has none of the kit's passive or innate extra abilities or powers. He also employs Barbarian Rage instead of Kai. This could be a developer error and makes no sense thematically and the kit isn't implemented properly in the creature file or the AI scripts.

Mod content[]
- This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.
The Ascension mod revises all five bhaalspawn as well as some of their supporting creatures. In some encounters extra dialogue is added.
The Sword Coast Stratagems mod works with the Ascension mod and helps improve and update AI scripting, as well as configuring it to work with the Enhanced Edition game.
The SCS "Gameplay Tweaks" component moves Vhailor's Helm to Throne of Bhaal. It is now worn by Gromnir Il-Khan, who is not afraid to use it, and will employ a Simulacrum of himself at the outset of hostilities.
Both Ascension and SCS mods individually and combined will improve Gronmnir's toughness and abilities.
Gromnir is changed to a unique Bhaalspawn Level 24 Berserker, with uses of War Cry, Enrage, Hardiness and Whirlwind Attack, which he will apply. He has 3 pips proficiency in Morning star. The bhaalspawn has a several unique Bhaalspawn powers and adjusted abilities including:
- 285 Hit Points, Adjusted THAC0: -5, Adjusted Armor Class: -5
- Movement Rate bonus +3
- Morning star Attacks per round: 4, 16-22 crushing damage per hit.
- Wields a different undroppable Ice Star (a look alike) weapon in main hand. No longer dual wields. The weapon is similar to the original, but also has new on-hit effects, including a potential triple Disease effect- can actually infect the target with three different and simultaneous debilitating effects, a Slow effect, Strength ability score drain as well as hit point damage every 3 seconds. The effects can be blocked by magic resistance, and there are three different saving throws vs. Death with -2,-4 and -6 penalties to negate the effects. Repetitive hits can stack on the same target. The effects last from 2-10 rounds and can't be dispelled. A cure disease can remove. Keep an eye on the combat log for "Slowed", "Enfeebled" and "Stricken by foul disease". If those are seen, then the saving throws(s) were missed.
- 25% innate Physical damage resistance.
- 25% innate Magic resistance.
- Can see invisible creatures by script.
- Immunity to Backstab.
- Immunity to Disease.
- Quaffs Potion of Superior Healing when damaged to a certain threshold, several times. May drink a single Potion of Invulnerability and or a Potion of Magic Shielding.
- SCS smarter tactical AI to recognize enemy defenses and see opponent vulnerabilities.
- He wears an undroppable belt (BHAALIMM.ITM) that provides immunity to: Charm Creature effects, Intelligence Drain, Panic, Morale break, Held effects, Webbed, Disintegrate effect, Kill target, Power Word, Kill, Polymorph Other, Confusion, Berserk, Imprisonment, Level drain, Sleep (Status Effect), Stun, Poison damage and Poison.
At death, drops the same as the unmodified creature, except no Morningstar +3 or Potion of Extra Healing. Any leftover potions not used by script are dropped. A SCS random treasure is also provided with that mod installed. May also drop Vhailor's Helm if that SCS component was installed.
The Golem Construction for Spellcasters mod places two allied golems in Gromnir's Lair for support and will help defend him. These are a "Perfect Clay Golem" and a "Perfect Stone Golem". Note that the clay golem will probably apply a Golem Haste effect upon Gromnir and several allies in the throne room at the outset of battle.
