Baldur's Gate Wiki

Greater Restoration is a 7th level priest spell only usable by the cleric class. It is a potent healing spell, completely restoring a target's hit points in addition to curing Level drain, and a variety of other status effects.

There are scrolls of Restoration in the series:

Unlike other spell scrolls, scrolls of Restoration may be cast by any character, as long as their Intelligence is 9 or above.

Desription[]

When this spell is cast, the life energy level of the recipient is raised. This reverses any previous life energy level drain of the creature by a force or monster. A Greater Restoration spell will also restore the Intelligence score of a creature affected by the Feeblemind spell and negate any form of insanity, such as confusion or berserk. It fully heals the target and cures any diseases or poisons. The casting of this spell is very draining on the priest, who will likely require rest immediately afterward.

Gameplay[]

The caster applies this spell to a single creature, including self if desired at a "touch range".

Once the spell casting is complete, a 3D effect graphic and a color fade briefly plays upon the spell recipient, and a text is displayed, reading <CASTER>: Casts Greater Restoration: <RECIPIENT>.

The caster will likely also show an icon on their portrait (No. 39) titled "Fatigue".

This spell applies many cures to the recipient, and reverses some ailments, and heals hit point damage, all in one immediate application, including:

  • Restore current hit point modifier to 100%.
  • Cures all Disease effects from many sources and spells (the same ones the Cure Disease spell works on).
  • Cures all active Poison effects.
  • Cures Feeblemindedness.
  • Cures Fear/Panic.
  • Cures Confused effect/Rigid Thinking.
  • Resets Morale to the recipient's normal value, as if the recipient never suffered any morale erosion/modification.
  • Cures Level drain effects, restoring lost levels.

The caster will gain a +7 Fatigue modifier value assigned, which could mean they'll start suffering with fatigue penalties immediately or soon.

Notes[]

  • This spell will break Sanctuary, even if cast on self.
  • Contrary to the description, it does not cure berserk, only Exaltation does.
  • In the Enhanced Edition, this spell does not restore ability point drain, such as "Devour Brain" from a Mind Flayer, or strength drain from a Spirit Troll etc. Those drained attributes have to be regained back usually through just waiting for drain's duration to wear off.
  • The scroll version of Greater Restoration casts at a range of 40 ft.
  • Baldur's Gate II:
    Shadows of Amn
    (2000)
This icon indicates content from the original Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn campaign.
In the original Shadows of Amn, any spell slots lost through Level drain would have their loaded spell forgotten, even when their level was restored.
  • Baldur's Gate:
    Enhanced Edition
    (2012)
This icon indicates content from the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition campaign.
Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition – Shadows of Amn (2013)
This icon indicates content from the Shadows of Amn campaign of the Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition.
In the Enhanced Editions, spell slots lost through Level drain would remain memorized but would still count as used up.

Trivia[]

The Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset has no spell titled "Greater Restoration", nor is there a "Lesser Restoration" spell. Instead, there is a 7th level Priest spell titled Restoration.

In the PnP version, when this spell is cast, the life energy level of the recipient creature is raised by one. This reverses any previous life energy level drain of the creature by a force or monster. Thus, if a 10th-level character had been struck by a wight and drained to 9th level, the restoration spell would bring the character up to exactly the number of experience points necessary to restore him to 10th level once again, restoring additional Hit Dice (or hit points) and level functions accordingly.

The PnP Restoration spell is effective only if the spell is cast within one day of the recipient's loss of life energy, per experience level of the priest casting it.

A Restoration spell restores the intelligence of a creature affected by a feeblemind spell. It also negates all forms of insanity.

Casting this spell ages both the caster and the recipient by two years.

The Restoration spell is reversible and can instead be used to cast "Energy Drain".

Bugs[]

  • Baldur's Gate II:
    Throne of Bhaal
    (2001)
This icon indicates content from the original Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal campaign.
If Throne of Bhaal is installed, Greater Restoration will affect the entire party. This is fixed in the Enhanced Editions.
  • As of BG2EE 2.6, The Restoration scroll should have touch range. This is identified for correction in the pending The Enhanced Edition Fixpack (EEFP). Ref: (restore.itm)

Mod content[]

This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

Spell Revisions mod has changed this Divine spell, revising its effects, range, casting time, and description. See below:

Greater Restoration
Level: 7
School: Necromancy
Sphere: Necromantic
Range: Touch
Duration: Permanent
Casting Time: 5
Area of Effect: 1 creature
Saving Throw: None

A Greater Restoration spell removes most temporary and permanent negative effects from the target creature. It reverses any previous life energy level drain of the creature caused by any force, spell, or monster. It can restore a polymorphed or petrified creature to its natural form, break the effects of a curse, reverse unnatural mental states such as confusion, feeblemindedness, and berserk rages, and free the recipient from magical effects like fear, paralysis, sleep, and stun. This potent spell will also restore any lost hit points and cure the target of any diseases or poisons.

The casting of this spell is very draining on the priest, leaving him physically and mentally exhausted. For 5 rounds after the spell is cast, the priest will suffer a -2 penalty to hit, damage, armor class, and casting speed factor.

Note: This spell is usable only Cleric/Paladin classes.
Note:The SR version adds several extra ailments and maladies that are cured compared to the original game's spell version.
