A Grease spell coats the ground with a slippery, fatty layer of conjured grease material.

Description[]

A Grease spell covers a material surface with a slippery layer of a fatty, greasy nature. Any creature entering the area or caught in it when the spell is cast must save vs. Spell at +2 or slip and slide, unable to move effectively. Those who successfully save can move, albeit slowly, for the rest of the round (but will need to save vs. Spell again the following round). Those who remain in the area are allowed a Saving Throw each round until they escape the area.

Gameplay[]

The caster designates a point on the area map where to place the spell's center location using the targeting cursor.

When the spell is finished, the "grease overlay" graphic animation expands from the designated point and fills the area of effect radius for the spell's duration.

Any creature in the AoE is allowed a Saving throw versus Spell (with 2-point bonus) each round within the greasy radius.

If the saving throw is successful, then the spell has no effect on the creature, although another saving throw is required the next round, and the one after that etc. as long as the creature remains in the greasy AoE.

If the creature fails the saving throw, then they are affected by the spell, which reduces their movement rate modifier value to 20% of what it was originally - for example a humanoid creature typically has a 9-movement rate, and if "greased" it falls to about 2. If a creature is under a Haste effect it falls to about 4 etc.

Once a creature has failed the saving throw their movement rate is lowered for the duration of the spell, whether they are still within the greasy area or not; perhaps the greasy film covers their footwear/feet.

A player character affected by the spell will show an icon (No. 145) titled "Grease" on their portrait.

This spell can be blocked by Magic resistance or a Minor Globe of Invulnerability.

Additionally, a Spell Immunity: Conjuration will negate the grease spell.

A Free Action (spell) or Potion of Freedom can prevent or cure the movement modifier reduction of the grease spell.

Dispel Magic effects won't remove the actual grease spell from the map but can possibly remove it from an affected individual.

A creature affected by a Grease spell will be unaffected by another of the same spell, to prevent "stacking" - once greasy, you are as greasy as you can be.

A grease spell causes innocent and neutral creatures to become hostile.

Notes[]

  • In the Original Baldur's Gate (game), duration doesn't increase with caster level: The area of effect is active for 10 repetitions, and should a creature fail their save, they'll be slowed for 7 seconds – 1 round in that game. The creature's speed is set to 1 during that time. (Default speed unknown.)
  • In the Original Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn it is the same, but they will be slowed for 10 seconds. Default speed is 9, reduced to 1. The area is active for 3 rounds + 1 round / level.

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Wizard spell Grease differs in its implementation than the game version. The spell can also be applied to objects like a rope or ladder, or even to an opponent's weapon handle (although they get a saving throw to avoid it). The D&D Grease spell doesn't slow movement, it makes victims slip, skid, unable to retain balance and fall over, or drop items and lose their grip.

A Grease spell covers a material surface with a slippery layer of a fatty, greasy nature. Any creature caught in it when the spell is cast must save vs. breath at +2 bonus or fall to the ground for one round. Those who enter the area or remain within it must make a save each round until they reach the nearest non-greased surface. A creature that succeeds on their saving throw can walk within or through the area of grease but will have their movements slowed considerably. Incorporeal and flying creatures are unaffected by this spell, as are exceptionally large creatures who suffer little to no distress from the greasy coating.
