A Grease spell covers the ground with a layer of slippery oil.

Description[]

A Grease spell covers a material surface with a slippery layer of a fatty, greasy nature. Any creature entering the area or caught in it when the spell is cast must save vs. Spell at +2 or slip and slide, unable to move effectively. Those who successfully save can move, albeit slowly, for the rest of the round (but will need to save vs. Spell again the following round). Those who remain in the area are allowed a Saving Throw each round until they escape the area.

Gameplay[]

  • In Original BG1, duration doesn't increase with level: The area of effect is active for 10 repetitions, and should a creature fail their save, they will be slowed for 7 seconds – 1 round in that game. The creature's speed is set to 1 during that time. (Default speed unknown.)
  • In Original BG2 it is the same, but they will be slowed for 10 seconds. Default speed is 9, reduced to 1. The area is active for 3 rounds + 1 round / level.
  • In Enhanced Editions, the slowed down duration does increase with level, up to 23 rounds at level 20+ (same duration as the Grease area). The creature's speed is reduced to 20% of its non-greased value. The behavior of the spell here is weird since once a character fails their save, they are permanently affected by Grease until the duration runs out, which can go up to 23 rounds. Successive saving throws won't end the effect if the character has failed their save once. And the effect persists even after leaving the area of Grease, and even if the grease area has already ended its duration. So if a level 20 mage casts Grease, it will last for 23 rounds. If in round 22 a character is inside the Grease area and fails their saving throw, they will now get the grease effect for a further 23 rounds, even if they move out of the area or the Grease area itself ends, and further saving throws won't end this effect until it runs out.
  • In all versions, succeeding a saving throw means all adverse effects are avoided until the next time the area of effect triggers.
  • Magic resistance negates the effect.
  • An active grease effect on a character can be ended by Free Action (which also provides further immunity) or a successful Dispel Magic, but not by Remove Paralysis. Of course, the spell can also be blocked by Minor Globe of Invulnerability or Spell Immunity: Conjuration. The grease area itself can't be prematurely dispelled.

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, changing its effects and saving throw. See below for description:
Grease Level: 1
School: Conjuration
Range: Medium
Duration: 1 turn
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: 10’ radius
Saving Throw: Breath partial

A Grease spell covers a material surface with a slippery layer of a fatty, greasy nature. Any creature caught in it when the spell is cast must save vs. breath at +2 bonus or fall to the ground for one round. Those who enter the area or remain within it must make a save each round until they reach the nearest non-greased surface. A creature that succeeds on their saving throw can walk within or through the area of grease but will have their movements slowed considerably. Incorporeal and flying creatures are unaffected by this spell, as are exceptionally large creatures who suffer little to no distress from the greasy coating.
