The Globe Machine is an apparatus located in its own gated chamber on the Watcher's Keep Final Seal dungeon level of Watcher's Keep.

This article page is to present the machine, the "creature" file stats, and the gameplay interaction that occurs when the party engages with it.

The machine is part of the Unlocking the Final Seal questline - and is the means to obtain the Mind Key, which is one of three keys necessary to progress towards the Watcher's Keep Imprisoned One dungeon level.

The InfoBox displays the various "behind the scenes" parameters of the Globe Machine. In normal gameplay the machine is designed to be unobtrusive, and not targetable, in order to preserve the plot and story without causing scripting and execution errors by player actions. Placing a "creature" file on a map to represent an inanimate machine, statue, altar etc. is an Infinity Engine method employed throughout the various game titles.

An Automap notes marker labels the machine location as "The Globe Machine".

Gameplay - walkthrough[]

When first opening the gates to this machine's location, there will be a Mutated Spider group within, and they'll rush toward any detected party member to attack.

Once these gates are opened, they cannot be closed again.

The Globe Machine is positioned and built-into the floor of this dungeon. It is a circular pad with a metallic base plate, with four metal pods attached to it - on each pod is a large colored button and dispensing slot.

Just outside the machine's footprint are four colored glass and metal vertical tubes. These are selectable as empty containers, in which items can be inserted and removed (just like a chest or barrel).

To engage with the machine, select a party member and then use the cursor to select the center of the machine on the area map. Click on it.

The machine produces a dialogue box, and presents a series of text messages describing the following:

Built into the floor is a strange machine with four large, colored buttons. An inscription reads, "Those who serve must be worthy in mind, heart, and spirit. Only the worthy may unlock the final seal." A scroll lies beside the inscription.
The scroll seems to have been written by a scholar who was researching the machine's purpose. You skim down to the conclusion:
"It would seem that the purpose of this machine is to dispense glass globes of four colors. The globes have two purposes. Firstly, some of the globes contain magical liquids which can be used as potions of varying degrees of power. Other globes have no practical use and are probably meant to be placed in the containers that match their color. The intelligent thing to do would be to get all of the globes that one can and then place the ones that are of no use into the colored containers to obtain the prize. The globes that cannot be used are always the last ones dispensed."
"The problem is, every time a globe is dispensed, something nasty..." - The note trails off - It appears to be splattered with old blood.
Note: The statement in the scroll about the globes that cannot be used are always the last ones dispensed is actually false.

After this series of dialogue that is clicked through by the player, another dialogue box presents a selection of choices for what to do next, reading:

In front of the machine are four colored containers which correspond to the colored buttons—one red, one blue, one green, and one purple.
  • Push the red button.
  • Push the blue button.
  • Push the green button.
  • Push the purple button
  • Leave the machine for now.

If the party isn't ready to select a colored button yet, then go with the last choice, which displays the following:

You leave the machine for the time being, even though you suspect that the path to the next level is somehow connected to the strange, colored containers.

Otherwise, select a colored button of your choice, and a dialogue box will display a different text depending on the color chosen, such as:

  • Ready for almost anything, you press the red button.
  • With a deep breath of anticipation, you reach out and press the blue button.
  • You press the green button, praying you have made the right choice.
  • Hoping for the best, you press the purple button.

This is followed by:

The machine clicks and whirs and produces a <Globe Color>, which you pick up. Suddenly, you hear strange sounds almost beyond your range of hearing. The sounds rapidly get louder as something approaches.
Note: The combat log will now display: The Party Has Gained An Item: <Color> Globe, and a list of each party member's name - "<Name> has gained 1000 quest experience points."

The party member will now have the first globe produced by the button (whichever color was selected) placed in the character's general inventory - if the inventory is full, it will be placed on the ground next to the character.

This action triggers a spawning of a particular individual or group of enemies to the eastern side of this chamber. Each colored button and the sequence of that color produces a different threat.

When four buttons have been pressed on a particular color, and the button is tried again, a text will display reading:

This time, nothing happens when you press the button.

The party member can continue selecting colored buttons in whichever order and color they wish to. Once four globes have been received from each color, that is all that can be produced by that particular-colored button - this means that a total of sixteen globes can be dispensed by the machine.

When the party is ready, place the correct globe into the matching colored container, which are; the fourth dispensed Red Globe into the red container, and the third dispensed Blue Globe into the blue container, the first dispensed Green Globe into the green container, and finally, the third dispensed Purple Globe into the purple container.

When the globes are all placed correctly, a Quest Journal entry will register, the Mind Key will be obtained by the party member, and each party member receives 10,000 XP.
