Frost Salamanders are a species of extraplanar reptilian humanoids that resemble blue-skinned humans with horns from the waist up and giant, blue-scaled serpents from the waist down. They hail from the Paraelemental Plane of Ice and are the icy counterpart to the common Salamander. Thie assigned class is Water Elemental.
Involvement[]
Frost Salamanders are a rarely met monster in the saga but can be found in the Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, within a section of Abazigal's Lair. They share the same animation as the more common Ice Salamander and are visually identical.
Variants[]
Gameplay[]
These creatures advance toward detected enemies and engage in melee combat with their spear weapon. They are a tougher opponent in all respects than the Ice Salamander.
They strike rapidly with five attacks per round and have a respectable THAC0.
The Salamander's Spear weapon empowers the creature with a surprising retaliatory strike back upon any attacker in close range to the monster - whether by spell, missile or weapon. Any hit upon the creature will also apply Cold damage onto the attacker, exactly like the Fireshield (Blue) spell.

Trivia[]
Ice Salamanders were invented by Black Isle, first debuting in Icewind Dale before appearing in Shadows of Amn. The closest equivalent to such a creature in the tabletop of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is the Frost Salamander, a creature originally from the Mystara setting which resembles a massive, multi-legged lizard - something like a blue-white basilisk in appearance.
Mod content[]
- This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.
The Ascension mod makes a few revisions to this creature, and a few more if also paired with the Sword Coast Stratagems mod (both mods are designed to work together). The creature is now a 17 Hit Dice creature with a similar set of stats, albeit it only provides 7,500 XP with the mod.
The salamander now wields its spear with 5 pips in weapon proficiency, and 2 pips with two-handed weapon fighting style. It only has 3 Attacks per round with this mod but deals additional damage due to the grand mastery in the weapon. An improved AI is also assigned for better tactical combat targeting, enemy resistance recognition, and that sort of behavior. The creature is also provided with electricity resistance, and a couple of other status effect immunities. All else is mostly the same as the unmodified game.
