Baldur's Gate Wiki

Upon casting the Friends spell, the wizard becomes more personally compelling to those with whom he interacts. This spell does not stack with itself.

Description[]

A Friends spell causes the wizard to temporarily gain 6 points of Charisma. Those who view the caster tend to be very impressed with the spellcaster and make an effort to be his friend and help him, as appropriate to the situation. Officious bureaucrats might decide to become helpful; surly gate guards might wax informative; attacking orcs might spare the caster's life, taking him captive instead.

Gameplay[]

The caster applies this spell upon themself only.

After the spell is cast the spell temporarily raises the caster's Charisma attribute by +6, although the value cannot exceed 25.

When the spell is cast a text display reads "Charisma Modification", and an icon (No. 115) titled "Friends" is placed on their portrait.

A brief 3D effect animation and color glow renders over the caster as well.

When the spell expires, a sound effect audibles signifying the finish of the spell.

The spell description isn't completely accurate - the actual duration of the spell is 5-rounds plus 1 round per level, peaking at caster level 20.

Multiple casting of the Friend spell do not "stack", and the most current casting supersedes the previous spell.

Casting this spell is a cheap and effective way to improve barter prices. Cast it before dealing with any merchant for optimal results.

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Wizard spell Friends has a 60-ft radius area of effect from the caster.

A friends spell causes the wizard to temporarily gain 2d4 points of Charisma. Intelligent creatures within the area of effect at the time the spell is cast must make immediate reaction checks based on the character's new Charisma. When the spell wears off, the creatures realize that they have been influenced, and their reactions are determined by the DM.

The BG video game didn't implement the random 2d4 charisma increase, nor the reaction/realization of those interacting with the caster that they were influenced by a spell.
