Free Hendak and the Slaves is a side-quest. It can be started in the Copper Coronet in the Athkatla Slums.

Aquisition[]

In order to get this quest, the player must first resolve parts of the Investigate activities in the Copper Coronet's rooms questline.

In order to get the Free Hendak and slave quest, the party must speak with Hendak and agree to liberate him, and the other slaves locked up in the Copper Coronet. If the player agrees to help, the player's journal will register the quest, as follows:

Free Hendak and the slaves
It appears that the Copper Coronet is keeping slaves to perform its entertainments... I have talked to a slave by the name of Hendak and agreed to free his people. I will need a key that is currently held by the beastmaster located across the arena.

Walkthrough and gameplay[]

In the rear and restricted areas of the Copper Coronet Hendak can be found. Locked in a cell with another slave gladiator. Several children are also locked up back here.

You will be warned by a guard to leave this area immediately, and he means it. The only option to prevent the guards from turning hostile is to agree to leave (if you agreed to leave then attempt to speak to Hendak, this will turn them hostile anyway). After defeating the guards, Hendak, the ex-gladiator slave, will initiate dialogue (if a party member is close enough to the cell door) and then urge you to free him and the other slaves. If you agree, the quest registers in the Journal. If you don't agree a journal entry will register as follows:

Investigate activities in the Copper Coronet's rooms
I have encountered a slave called Hendak in the Copper Coronet's pen. He asked me to help him escape. I refused.

From this point, you have the option of reporting Hendak's escape plan back to Lehtinan, who will give you the Beastmaster Key and ask you to kill Hendak instead (Aerie'll turn hostile but Keldorn will not, surprise). If you report it, but decline to take care of killing Hendak, then his guards will do it. Hendak will be killed (you don't see this), and the Free Hendak and the slaves quest won't occur and is shuttered for good.

Assuming that at some point the player decides to speak with and agree to help Hendak then get the key from the Beast Master and liberate all the slaves in the back rooms.

  • Go through the arena and kill the Beastmaster in the beast cells section of the inn. Take the key from his body.
  • Return to the slave prisons, free the boy and girl in the side cells first, or they both disappear after the later stage, and you miss the chance to get 2500 XP for freeing each of them. Once Hendak is out of his cell you will gain 7500 XP and all the other gladiators will break loose and attack all the Copper Coronet guards they come across. You suffer no reputation loss for killing the two noblemen who have been watching the fights, but it does turn the other tavern patrons hostile, as will killing any of them.
  • Follow Hendak through the inn until he confronts Lehtinan. Watch (but don't help him win the duel to avoid a scripting issue). After the fight you will be rewarded with 48,750 XP for allowing Hendak to administer some justice and he will ask your party to free more slaves who are being held in the Slaver Stockade located nearby in the Slums District. If you kill Lehtinan before Hendak does, Hendak will lose control and turn hostile because you denied him his vengeance.
  • There is a secret stairwell near the gladiator prison which will lead to the sewers. Pass through the sewers to the Slaver Stockade. (It's not strictly necessary to go this way. You can also pick the lock to the front door of the Slave Stockade, although there is a guard posted there.)
  • When you leave the sewers, you will be confronted by Captain Haegan and a group of Slavers. Kill them and take the Captain's key which will open the cells, though those can also be picked with a skill of seventy.
  • Use the key to open the door in the northeast wall, defeat the trolls, and free the girl. Whether or not you give her 100 gp, you will receive 3500 XP and +1 Reputation, though reactions by party members will differ. (Although this can be done independently from any quest, it's usually achieved while the party is doing this quest)
  • There are two more cells ahead and up some stairs which hold child prisoners. Free them.
  • You can either keep killing slavers and leave through the front door or return to the entrance to the sewers. If you leave through the front door, a Slaver Guard outside will fight you if you pick the lock on the door.
  • Return to Hendak in the Copper Coronet. You will be rewarded with 38000 XP for each party member, +1 reputation, 3900 gp, and the Bastard Sword Kondar.

Mod content[]

Mods icon This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

Installation of the Quest Pack Mod will add a "Further Slaver Involvement" component. This component allows additional options in dealing with the slavers around the city:

  • It is now possible to sell the orphan in the Graveyard District to Lehtinan. If you know he's a slaver, you can make him an offer once you've encountered Risa.
  • You may try to extort the slavers, threatening to warn the guard if they do not pay up; success is not guaranteed. New dialogue options should be apparent in the encounter with the slavers and corrupt guards at night in the Slums.
