The Forest of Tethir is a location accessible during the events in Chapter 6 of the Shadows of Amn.
This area is only reachable after having passed through the Small Teeth Pass area. Once that has been done, the Forest of Tethir can be selected as a valid travel destination on the World Map.
Background[]
Visiting this area is optional by the party during chapter 6. There will not be a quest reason to be here in the unmodified game until after the party has delivered the Rhynn Lanthorn to Elhan as part of The Elven City Requires My Aid questline.
However, the player can direct the party to this location before that time if desired. There is some freelance adventuring, exploring and a small side quest available in the forest. Visiting the area early won't spoil or harm any later quests, so go ahead and do it if you want to.

Gameplay walkthrough[]
The Forest[]
The party will enter the map on the north edge of the area.
The Forest is much denser than the North Forest area. Huge ancient trees grow here, towering well over a hundred feet tall. The canopy of foliage blocks all but limited speckled sunlight on the forest floor. Still ponds of silent water abound. This forest is very old indeed.
Various wildlife is present in the forest. Some will be predatory and hostile, as well as many passive birds, moose, deer, rabbit and squirrel animals.
When ready, begin exploring. As the party maneuvers across the spongy and damp forest floor, pressing through bramble and thick ferns - they will come upon gigantic fallen trees with vast trunks. If the party can clamber up some side branches, they can use the trees as a pathway to navigate past the undergrowth and move about the area.
Hostile encounters in the Forest[]
Throughout the area there are several spawn zones that will generate hostile creatures. They may be natural creatures such as a stalking Panther, a group of armed Goblin bowmen and foot soldiers, horrible mist creatures of various types, perhaps even a Wolfwere pack or a Yuan-ti war party. Be ever on the lookout for these attackers.
The time of day/night influences the probability and type of spawns generated.
The Cabin[]
On the western side of the map (see the Automap marker on the players "World Map" tab) is a location marked "Cabin". Descending on a huge branch will lead down to a slightly cleared area with a cabin structure. You'll probably spot a lone male elf dressed in leather armor and a hood - when within a specific distance the familiar face of Coran from Baldur's Gate will address the party, he'll say:
- "Hail, good friend Gorion's Ward! I am most pleased to see you here, you of all people! Your timing could not be better, as I am in most dire need!"
A back-and-forth dialogue will continue here. In essence, Coran needs help rescuing Safana from some wolfweres that have captured her. Coran isn't strong enough to do it alone, and requests the assistance of Gorion's Ward. The player can refuse, or agree. If the party says no, Coran says if you change your mind he'll be heading over to the Wolfwere Camp location to see about attempting a rescue. If the party agrees he'll be pleased and will meet the party at the camp. The player's Journal registers the Coran and the Wolfweres side quest.
Coran then departs for the Wolfwere Camp. Meet him there when you are ready to do so (there is no time limit).
The Cave[]
On the eastern and slightly south side of the map is an Automap Marker on the player's world map marked as "Cave".
To investigate this, find the door on a hillside, open it and enter within.
See the Forest of Tethir Cave for more details. What's inside?
Return to the Forest[]
Once the party has returned the Rhynn Lanthorn to Elhan - the elven commander transports the party back to the forest. The lanthorn buzzes with power and penetrates the illusionary ward placed by Jon Irenicus to reveal the hidden entrance to Suldanessellar.
Elhan enters the gateway and asks the party to follow when they are ready.
If the player wishes to finish any tasks in chapter 6, go ahead and do that now, before transitioning through the gate and beginning Chapter 7.

Trivia[]
Looks like the developers went with the dwarven spelling on the World Map, as it's titled "Forest of Tethyr" - according to the Forgotten Realms Wiki, the correct spelling for the forest is the elvish spelling Tethir, named after an elvish hero.

Mods[]
The Sword Coast Stratagems mod revises the AI scripts for most creatures on the map for smarter tactical behavior. The Yuan-ti mage is a potent spell caster. Various mist creatures will have new innate abilities, such as the Mist Horror. The spell casting Wyvern cultist has a large repertoire of magic.
The Broken Lanthorn mod will require the party to find another missing lens piece for the Rhynn Lanthorn in this area.
