Although Fist is not a regular item in-game, lacking physical representation other than the icon in the toolbar, it is a selectable weapon treated as an item in the game engine.
For all classes other than Monk, Fist is the only weapon that deals non-lethal damage, allowing the PC to knock enemies unconscious without killing them, allowing the PC to withdraw from fights without losing reputation, and allowing the PC to safely steal items from containers as unconscious NPCs will not alert the guards. However, while no loss in reputation is incurred, the enemy NPC will permanently remain hostile toward the PC (though this can be temporarily alleviated by charming).
Monk's Fist[]
- Main article: Monk
For Monks, fists are used as a main way of fighting, unlike the other classes. They lose the ability to use their fists as a nonlethal "weapon" as a result. During leveling, as their fists become treated as a magic weapon, they are called Fist +1, Fist +2, Fist +3 and Fist +4 respectively in Baldur's Gate:
