Baldur's Gate Wiki
Not to be confused with Firetooth (dagger).

Firetooth +4 appears in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition or Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal.

Description

Firetooth (crossbow)

One of the most powerful crossbows in the realms, Firetooth has no need for ammunition as it automatically launches magical arrows of fire.

Aquisition[]

It can be bought from Sister Garlena on the top of Watcher's Keep - however, the party must first agree to take on the Watcher's Keep (Quest) before Sister Garlena's store is available.

In the Baldur's Gate II Chapter 9, the item can be upgraded with the Bowstring of Gond component and a sum of 5,000 gold through Cespenar the butler imp in the Pocket Plane (area).

Gameplay[]

The crossbow is an enchanted light crossbow which does not require ammunition, but instead creates magical bolts of fire +4, which inflict 2 points of Fire damage. It can still fire chosen bolt projectiles from the quiver, if the wielder wants this. The user needs an 8 Strength attribute to operate the crossbow.

The crossbow itself adds 1d8 +4 points of damage, has +6 THAC0 bonus (+4 from the crossbow, +2 from the magically created bolt) and a weight of 5 lbs. The weapon has a speed factor of 1 and it fires one projectile per round.

The Fire damage added to any bolt hit can be blocked by Magic resistance.

When the user wishes to ensure a target is hit with a +4 Enchanted projectile (or +5 with the upgraded version), then for example, do not fire an ordinary Bolt, Bolt +1, Bolt +2, or Bolt +3 from the Firetooth Crossbow - the loaded ammunition will be the actual enchantment value that attempts to strike the target.

If the user wishes to maximize potential damage onto a target, then adding another bolt ammunition type to the crossbow will increase the damage range. For example:

Firing the Firetooth +4 using its own ammunition only; 1d8+4 (+2 Fire) (strikes as a +4 Enchanted item)

Firing Firetooth +4 using a Kuo-toan Bolt; 1d8+4 + 2d6 (+2 Fire) (strikes as a +1 Enchanted item)

Also, using certain enchanted ammunition with Firetooth can benefit the wielder who wishes to get the best THAC0 possible - for example firing a Bolt +3 at a target will improve the to hit roll by 3-points over just firing the crossbow's own ammuntion.

Upgraded[]

Firetooth (crossbow)

The magical bowstring of Gond makes even the Firetooth Crossbow's enchanted missiles more accurate and more powerful. Firetooth will only fire these enchanted missiles, so there is no need for ammunition.

Firetooth +5 is an enchanted light crossbow which does not require ammunition, but instead creates magical bolts of fire +5, which inflict 2 points of fire damage. The crossbow itself adds 1d8+5 points of damage, it has +7 THAC0 bonus (+5 from the crossbow, +2 from the bolts). The weight, speed factor and rate of fire are not improved.

Bugs[]

Launchers that generate their own ammo (e.g. Gesen's Bow or the Firetooth crossbow) would override the projectile of loaded ammo, meaning it could interact with the target protections incorrectly. This is identified and corrected in The Enhanced Edition Fixpack (EEFP).
