Find the Nether Scroll for Edwin is a Companion Quest with Edwin Odesseiron during the Shadows of Amn campaign.
Acquisition[]
This quest does not begin unless you have Edwin in the party and they enter Athkatla's Graveyard District. Strictly speaking, the quest to Find Proof of Mae'Var's Treachery does not have to be completed by reporting back to Renal Bloodscalp; it can be initiated as soon as Edwin has joined the party, which is right after completing Mae'Var's last task to show him Embarl's Dagger. At that point, Edwin can join.
Upon entering the Graveyard, Edwin will remember "...soothsayers and conjurers...whisper in hushed tones about an artifact lost to antiquity...the Nether Scroll...The lower tombs, perhaps?" After this, the player's Journal is updated, under Find the Nether Scroll for Edwin.
Walkthrough[]
If you do not want Edwin in your usual group, then you can clear the following areas with this group and then return with Edwin, so he does not leech too much XP. All creatures related to his quest will spawn only with him in the group, yielding some extra XP.
In the Graveyard District, use the ground-level entrance shaped like a pyramid (x 650, y 1860) to enter the Lower Tombs. Disarm the trap in the doorway, and the nearby trapped locker with minor loot (incl. scroll of protection from fire), and another trapped locker (ray of enfeeblement, minor spell deflection). Traverse the bridge East past spiders and undead to the entrance to the Southern Dungeons (x 2750, y 3250).
"The stale stench of death assails your nostrils. Tombs line this hall, and you hear the sound of shuffling within them."
Alongside the walls, there are doors which can be inspected, leading to small empty rooms. Regardless of whether you open the doors, they will disgorge various undead including zombies, wights, skeleton warriors, ghasts, etc. If you have a cleric, start turning undead, or cast repulse undead. If your AI script has your adventurers set to prefer melee, they will chase down fleeing undead, triggering more door openings and traps, so set them to prefer ranged or just make sure that they don't chase mobs down the hall.
There are traps located by the eyes, chin, and left hand of the mosaic portrait on the floor. The fifth set of doors unleash a vampire who will lead with domination. Don't miss the urn on the left wall (x 950, y 300, protection from electricity, pearl necklace, +1 bullets and +1 darts).
A hidden door on the right wall at the end of the hall opens to a corridor where you'll get a pair of mummies; then a shadow, a shadow fiend, and two wraiths. There's an urn at the intersection with some goodies (x 500, y 1300, +1 arrows).
Go south first, disarm traps (x 300, y 1600; x 430, y 1800; x 700, y 2000).
"This tomb has been cracked open, and anything of value has been removed. Looters have broken the fingers of the corpse, no doubt to take something it was holding." The looters missed one urn in the room with some +1 arrows.
Go back to the intersection and head East. More traps (x 800, y 1400). There's a sarcophagus at the same location. Open it for a skeleton warrior who drops Halcyon +1, a spear that also gives electrical damage, or in other words, vendor trash.
Just around the bend, you'll come to four mummies and two ghasts. A well-placed fireball or two will save a lot of ammunition.
When you round the next corner, you'll come face-to-face with Nevaziah, a long-dead wizard who doesn't realize just yet that he's a lich. Respond to his query that you are not with the Cowled Wizards, that indeed the Cowled Wizards are still searching for him.
- If Edwin can see Nevaziah then he will demand the Nether Scroll, resulting in a fight.
- Otherwise (i.e. you left Edwin around the corner) Nevaziah will allow you to you loot his chambers without a fight breaking out. You find some treasure (+1 bolts, wand of fear, scroll of reflect images, +1 dagger) ... but no Nether Scroll. Prep for a fight, go back and talk to him again as he is not yet hostile (this time with Edwin in visual range). Edwin will demand the Nether Scroll, resulting in a fight.
Nevaziah doesn't have a contingency spell loaded, and +2 ranged ammunition will easily disrupt all attempts at spellcasting. Pierce Magic and other spells that remove target protection will make him an easy kill.
Five days later, Edwin deciphers a part of the scroll and will receive a permanent 1-point bonus to all saving throws, 50,000 XP and +20 to his lore. A couple of days later another decipher of the scroll transforms himself into a woman without being able to turn back, from this point many companions will have very interesting (not funny to Edwina of course) conversations with HER.
Twelve days later, a Red Wizard of Thay by the name of Degardan dimension doors to present himself to the party and asks for information about Edwin. You have the choice to either betray him, which causes him to turn hostile and concludes the quest, or maintain his cover.
It's possible to pickpocket Degardan for a Wand of Monster Summoning, a Death Spell scroll, and Potion of Extra Healing x2.
In order for this event to occur, you must be in the Graveyard district, the City Gates district, or outside Athkatla (excluding all areas related to Dorn, Hexxat, and Neera). Degarden can make an appearance indoors or outdoors.
Two days after the first encounter, Degardan will find you again, and this time dispels the transformation, unveiling Edwin's "camouflage". To show his gratitude, Edwin then assaults Degardan.
Note that dialogue options and party actions can actually preempt Degarden getting to the dispelling stage. Slaying the mage before he can initiate or complete that "unmasking" of Edwin will leave Edwin in his female form for the rest of the game.
