Find out What Happened to Montaron is a side quest during the Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn campaign. It can be started after you Bring the Poisoned Man to his Friends, named Renfeld.

Acquisition[]

While walking through the Athkatla Docks, Xzar, a potential companion from Baldur's Gate, will approach you and ask you to free Montaron, his fellow companion, from the Harpers. However, before you can enter the Harpers' headquarters, you will need to get pass the doorman, as the front door is sealed against intrusion.

Walkthrough[]

Speak to Rylock, the doorman in front of Galvarey Estate (aka Harper Hold), who can be found southwest in Athkatla's Dock District. He will ask you to kill some evil creatures in Prebek's House before he will allow you to enter the building. If you agree, then at your convenience, visit the house to complete this mission.

Enter Prebek's House near the center of the Dock's area and defeat Prebek, Sanasha, and the goblins. Return to Rylock and then you can enter the building whenever you like.

When you are inside, the Harpers will say that you can't enter the floor above without harm if you don't have a Harper Amulet. An amulet can be found in a desk (1010.310) in the last study room, north of the main hall.

Go to the second floor. With the Harper Amulet equipped or in inventory, the Spectral Harpists won't attack you and your party, and they will answer questions. Alternatively, you could ignore the Harper Amulet or attack the Spectral Harpists for 9,000 XP each. You may find a letter here which suggest that the Harpers have polymorphed Montaron into a bird.

Go to the room with the aviary. Enter the aviary and take the Harper Bird who was once Montaron.

Leave Harper Hold and give the bird to Xzar. He will cast a reverse polymorph spell, but the bird is actually an assassin from the Harpers named Lucette who kills Xzar. The party has been misled.

Note: It is possible to kill Lucette before/after she kills Xzar, but before she can speak with the party. WARNING: If killed too quickly, Lucette cannot initiate dialog with the party, and Meronia may never appear to recall Jaheira to Harper Hold, effectively breaking that quest, and possibly also halting any Romance dialog she has with Gorion's Ward. Therefore, it is recommended to allow the assassination as scripted, without interference. See the Bugs Section below, for more detail.

Conclusion[]

After the assassination, Lucette talks to the party and you learn why she was sent to kill him. Jaheira also has some interjecting dialog with Lucette. After the talk, Lucette leaves and Meriona should enter the scene to recall Jaheira, thus starting the Summoned to the Harper Hold companion quest. Jaheira will briefly leave the party but should return. With Jaheira once again in your group during the Harper Hold quest, you will again have access to Galvarey Estate. Searching the chests upstairs will reveal Montaron's body for an additional 20,000 XP for the party to split, even if you previously opened and emptied all of them.

Bugs[]

  • It is possible to kill the Harper's assassin Lucette while she is killing Xzar. Listed below is a good reason to not do it.
    • However, the result is, her dialog with the party never happens, which means Meronia will not appear to get Jaheira to return to Harper Hold, effectively breaking the entire Harper Hold Plot line, and halting any further Romance "LoveTalk" events that Gorion's Ward might normally have with Jaheira (i.e., Jaheira Locals variable named LOVETALK might be stuck at 27).
    • Trying to fix it by manually spawning Meronia with C:CreateCreature("JAMERONI") will probably fail, because after the Meronia/Jaheira dialog, she leaves the party but does not go with Meronia; she just stands there with "nothing to say to you." If you cannot reload from a prior save, try spawning Xzar again (CRE Code: LYROS), accept his quest, then immediately spawn Lucette (HARPASS1) to kill Xzar... again.
    • Afterwards you should be able to talk to Lucette to get her dialog about why she was sent to kill Xzar. After talking, Lucette should walk away, and Meronia should enter the scene to have Jaheira leave properly. (Tested in SoA Classic). In the end, killing Lucette is more hassle than it's worth, if you don't intend to go through the steps to correct the missing globals in the script it will cause.

Mod Content[]

With the Unfinished Business (Baldur's Gate II) Mod installed and the Corrected “Xzar’s Creations” component, the creatures in Prebek's House will be more challenging - replacing the goblins. This include ghouls or ghasts, and a flesh golem. You may also find the bard slaying scimitar Shazzellim within.
