Find Gorion is the protagonist's very first task, obtained directly after character generation and the Prologue intro to the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. It appears under Important Events in the journal's quest tab.
“ | Gorion, my foster father, has informed me that we must immediately leave Candlekeep and set out on a journey. He has given me some gold, and I must purchase supplies for the road, including weapons and armor. | ” |
Walkthrough[]
It's advisable not to follow the journal's instructions as the first step. Exploring the keep, visiting every accessible building and speaking with each inhabitant will yield more gold to spend and various melee weapons, among other stuff, by e.g. taking from chests and barrels or by solving a number of quests.
Gorion can be found waiting on the steps to the sealed Candlekeep Library, on the building's southeastern walls. When spoken to, he urges his foster child to get ready to leave, "for there is no time to tarry!"[1] The answers he gives if asked for reasons or advice are obscure, and "you should know yourself well enough to purchase the gear you need […] so hurry off to the inn and speak with Winthrop."[2]
When finally "ready to go,"[3] Gorion's Ward will receive a healing spell and instructions for a case of emergency, and then the two leave their home.
It has become dark when they wander down the Lion's Way – and in this night, fate-changing things will happen, leading to the next important event, Go to the Friendly Arm Inn.

– Gorion: "This is very unnerving, I know, but you must trust me. It is very important that you pack your possessions so that we may leave Candlekeep immediately. Hurry, for there is no time to tarry! The keep is well protected but not invulnerable." - ↑

– Gorion: "My dear child, you should know yourself well enough to purchase the gear you need. I have given you what I can spare, so hurry off to the inn and speak with Winthrop. Use your skills as a reference and buy what basics you must, though spend wisely. His prices are fair, but you may not have enough gold to purchase all that you would want." - ↑ 3.0 3.1
