Fear is for those of no confidence!

Background[]

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn[]

Recruitment[]

Yoshimo is available to recruit from Chapter 1. You will meet him when you reach the second level of Irenicus's Dungeon, Yoshimo claims himself to be an escaping prisoner just like you, and will offer to join the party to increase the survival chance.

He joins the party at level 10, with weapon proficiencies in: Katana, Dagger, Short Bow, and Single Weapon Style.

Relationships[]

  • Yoshimo and Nalia de'Arnise bond over their shared thieving abilities. Yoshimo sees himself as something of a tutor for Nalia.

Yoshimo the companion plot[]

SPOILERS

{Proceed at your own risk}

Jon Irenicus or his disguised form as the Coordinator will eventually reveal his plan to draw Gorion's Ward into a carefully laid trap. It is at this juncture that Yoshimo is revealed to be his puppet. This occurs after the prison cells tour while navigating the Spellhold Main Floor area. It doesn't matter which method the party managed to get inside Spellhold, whether via Desharik or using the Wardstone for Asylum. In both cases Yoshimo's plot will occur.

The party will speak of their disgust over this betrayal. Once the party is incapacitated by a sleep gas - Yoshimo is present with Irenicus while he performs a procedure to drain the Bhaalspawn's soul essence.

During your escape you'll encounter Yoshimo again, he will teleport into the laboratory during the Battle with Irenicus in Spellhold at the same time that Irenicus is escaping the battle due to damage. Following that, Yoshimo delivers some dialogue and then goes hostile. Seconds later the Murderer thieves will begin to attempt to enter the lab as well. It's also revealed by Yoshimo that Irenicus has somehow probably placed sort of geas upon him, forcing him to obey his will or die instantly. After Yoshimo's inevitable death, you may pick up his heart and bring it to a priest of Ilmater later to grant him final rest in the afterlife, you earn 200,000 XP for doing so.

However, if you dismiss him and ask him to stay in the Copper Coronet before entering Spellhold, he will not be mentioned by Jon Irenicus at all after the inmate cells tour.

Once the party returns to Athkatla in chapter 6, if the party visits the Copper Coronet, Yoshimo automatically dies when you step inside. There will no heart to collect. Thus ends Yoshimo's appearance in the saga.

There are also tricks in to keep him alive, at least until Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. However, this isn't recommended, as the game has no dialogue for Yoshimo after a certain game point and wasn't designed for him to be present. Circumnavigating or using various exploits to achieve this is outside the scope of the wiki, although it can be found on the internet if the player wishes to investigate that exploit.

Gameplay[]

He is the only pure (non-dual class) thief in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. In both BG2 and BG2EE he has the kit Bounty Hunter.

Yoshimo has the following items when joining the party: his katana which can only be used by him, a short bow, studded leather armor and some arrows.

Yoshimo can dual-class to fighter. If you do so before leaving Irenicus's Dungeon in Chapter 1 he can become a strong archer, thanks to his 18 Dexterity and potential for grandmastery (due to the large experience gain upon completing the prologue). However, this is not advised for new players unless they have a backup thief until he regains his thief skills.

In-Game Description[]

When asked about his past, YOSHIMO seems disheartened that you are not already acquainted with his reputation. By his own account, he is apparently well known among people in the know, both as a daring rogue and as a dashing man about town. While the story sounds impressive, he seems ungainly for such exploits, possibly a bit more hapless than debonair. He wears it well, however, and perhaps even capitalizes on it. He seems to know that his kind of good-natured humor is well appreciated by most everyone he meets.

Interestingly, the game files include a line of dialogue for Yoshimo when the party enters the Abyss, which suggests that the developers of the original game initially had different plans for his role in the plot.
