Ettercaps are hideous creatures that resemble a cross between a gangly ape and a bloated spider.

Gameplay[]

Ettercaps attack three times per round. Their primary attack (weapon 1) only does 1d3 (slashing) damage, but another attack (weapon 2) does 1d8 (piercing) and forces a save vs. poison to avoid 2 hit points per second from poison for 37 seconds unless cured. Ettercaps are immune to webs.

Ettercaps have strong saving throws. However as they are below level 6 they are vulnerable to the cleric spell Command.

Summoned[]

In Shadows of Amn Ettercaps can be summoned by the spell Monster Summoning III. Summoned versions are virtually identical, having only slightly more hit points (42 instead of 40), but a worse THAC0 (15, not 11). They also do not carry random treasure.

Trivia[]

  • The offical website for the original game, now archived, had – in addition to some combat-related statistics – the following information about ettercaps:[1]

Ettercaps are ugly bipedal creatures that get along very well with all types of giant spiders. These creatures of low intelligence are exceedingly cruel, very cunning, and are skilled in setting traps - very deadly traps - much like the spiders that often live around them.

Ettercaps stand around six feet tall, even with their stooping gait and hunched shoulders. The creatures have short, spindly legs, long arms that reach nearly to their ankles, and large pot-bellies. The hands of ettercaps have a thumb and three long fingers that end in razor sharp claws. Tufts of thick, wiry, black hair cover their bodies, and their skin is dark and thick. Ettercaps' heads are almost equine in shape, but they have large reptilian eyes, usually blood-red in color, and large fangs, one protruding downward from each side of the mouth. The mouth itself is large and lined with very sharp teeth.
