The Drow Runaways is a side quest in Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear that can be discovered in the central northern section of the Underground River. It can be obtained by going through the winding path onto the northern side of the river, through the rooms containing Gurgle and Floss and Bellowgulp Bluefingers, and then heading north-by-north-east up a small path through a large pair of doors.
The party will discover a confrontation between some Crusaders led by Therli and a group of drow and driders led by a female drow named Shapur. Both sides will react to the party's presence, with Shapur threatening them and Therli begging for assistance. There is unique dialogue if the player's party contains Viconia DeVir or Baeloth Barrityl at this point. The party has two major options here; Attack or seek a peaceful resolution.
Attack[]
The party can attack either or both sides in the conflict.
In addition to minor loot from both sides' lesser fighters, Shapur drops Storm Pike, a Sling +1, 20 Bullets of Ice, and a set of Bracers of Binding, whilst Therli drops a Cloak of the Gargoyle.
Diplomacy[]
If the party takes the peaceful option, Shapur will explain that her group are looking for a pair of teen drow who have fled their home in the Underdark, and she demands that they retrieve them.
These teen drow, Kaelet and Umar, can be found in the extreme south-west corner of the Underground River, below the entrance to Kanaglym. Upon meeting them, the party has several options:
- Killing them awards a small amount of experience, but nothing more.
- If the party simply tells them to be on their way, or demands a bribe for their help, then the drow will leave and the party will get nothing.
- If the party convinces them to return to Shapur, they will get 6,000 XP. Upon returning to Shapur themselves, she will give Gorion's Ward a set of "enchanted bracers" - these will turn out to be Bracers of Binding, and she will then summon a Hook Horror, in an homage to the lore provided with an identified set of Bracers of Binding.
- If the player agrees to help the drow teens fake their deaths, they will be presented with the House Ryrrl Insignia and House Catanzaro Insignia. If the protagonist did not make the Ogre Bandit Camp hostile in the Underground River Entrance map, the drow teens can be found living amongst the ogres and have many voiced dialog lines.
When returning to Shapur:
- If the party returns after having killed the teens, the teens left, or with the House Insignias, regardless of if they confess to killing them, admit to letting them escape, or present the House Insignias and try to claim that the teens are dead, Shapur will attack. The party will gain 6,000 XP for the quest, plus the experience for defeating the drow and their loot.
- Depending on the protagonist's reaction and class, Shapur will believe them (a Charisma score of 14 or more seems to do the job) and leave the zone and the party will not gain XP, but she might first gift her magical halberd to the party [citation needed]. Some players have been rewarded the halberd by Shapur when she believes them about the teenagers' deaths. This may be true only if the party has a warrior or the protagonist is some kind of warrior (Needs verification).
- If the party didn't kill the teens, and tell Shapur that they have been killed by ankhegs, Shapur will leave and the party will not gain XP.
Regardless of how the drow are moved on, Therli will thank the party for their help by giving them his Cloak of the Gargoyle.
