Dragonspear Castle is an infamous fortress on the Sword Coast of the Forgotten Realms. Lying within reach of Baldur's Gate, Waterdeep and Athkatla, the castle is built around a portal to Avernus, the first of the Nine Hells. At several points in history, devils have used this portal to launch full-scale invasions of the Sword Coast, which have been beaten back, albeit at great cost.
As the game's title suggests, Dragonspear Castle is integral to the events of Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, which revolves around a coalition of forces from Baldur's Gate, Waterdeep and Daggerford laying siege to the castle after it is captured by the Shining Crusade of Caelar Argent, which seeks to open the portal and launch an invasion of Avernus instead.
